Labor Dispute in South America

• Los Angeles to Buenos Aires with a great tech stop in Panama City - Uneventful

• Trip to BA for boss to meet with colleagues. Rendezvous point for group trip to

Ushuaia

• Anticipating the possibility of having to reposition to Ushuaia for return trip to LA

• Noticing groups of protestors roaming pedestrian plazas and shopping areas in

central Buenos Aires

• Groups grow larger and more organized, carrying signs regarding labor disputes,

banging drums and blowing horns

• Close to the airport showed large groups of protestors descending on the airport

boundary and milling around, slowing traffic at the airport entrance. No apparent

violence.

• Enroute to Ushuaia the labor dispute affects our trip directly. Was ATC

sympathetic to the protestors in BA? Did the 30th anniversary of the Falklands

War have an impact?

• Approximately one hour into our three hour flight, controller advises USH glide

slope OTS

• Over the second hour, the localizer was OTS, followed by the VOR OTS. We

continued due to great weather forecast - Planned visual approach

• Controller queried whether we had a Spanish speaking controller onboard. We

did not and were told there were no English speaking controllers in the USH

tower

• Divert to Alternate aerodrome, Rio Grande. We decide to overnight and deputize

a local private pilot to ride along on short flight the next morning

• Handler guarantees English speaking controller in USH tower that morning. We

bring our new friend anyway

• Santiago became our de facto handler and helped us during our arrival at airport

security

• Marcelo Ribet from Munser FBO saves the day for a seamless departure. Our

handler was MIA
