October is a Blindness Awareness Month
K C H S N E W S L E T T E R
Who is blind or legally blind? Do these terms have the same meaning? Not really. A blind person is unable to see or is sightless
while a legally blind person has a visual acuity of 20/200 in the better eye with corrective aid. Here at KPBSD we have several stu-
dents and teachers that are blind or legally blind. They are students and teachers with personalities, likes and dislikes, and feel-
ings like everyone else - and by the way, they do have good and bad days just like you do!
National Federation for the Blind is an organization that advocates for persons that are blind or legally blind. Meet the Blind
Month is our nationwide campaign to increase awareness of and support for the National Federation of the Blind (NFB). The
NFB knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines us or our future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind peo-
ple because low expectations create obstacles between many people living with blindness and our dreams.
IF YOUR FRIEND IS BLIND…
As with a person with any disability, the best approach is to interact with the person, not with his or
her disability. In general, what you would do or say with a sighted person is ap-
propriate for a person with a visual impairment. However, to be most courteous,
here are some hints.
• Introduce yourself by name and make eye contact when speaking.
• Speak in your usual conversational voice.
• When a blind person enters the room, identify yourself.
• Indicate the end of a conversation, and let a blind person know when you
are walking away.
• Feel free to use vision-oriented words such as "see", "look", and "watch."
• Be specific when giving directions.
• Don't grab the arm of a person who is blind or visually impaired: offer
yours instead.
• Don't interfere with a blind or visually impaired person's cane, and don't pet or feed dog
guides.
• When in doubt, just ask.

From the shops……
Welding: Welding I students are welding their way through some basic joints with oxy-acetylene; some
joints with filler rod, some joints without. Welding II and III students are stick welding with 7018 and 6010
electrodes. Welding II/III students are progressing through the same joint check off list that AVTEC in Sew-
ard uses in their certified structural welding program. Students have also used our 40 ton hydraulic shears,
handheld plasma cutter, and oxy-acetylene track torch to prepare material to weld on.
*There will be an After-school welding academy starting Oct. 12. Students will be building an aluminum
snowmachine trailer; drive-on/drive-off style. 60 student hours, no fee, earn ½ credit. The class will meet
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30. See Mr. Hartman to sign up or for more information. Parents
can call me at 283-2140.
Construction: Students worked in groups and completed a set of sawhorses. This was a great exercise to
reiterate the basics; reading a tape measure, completing accurate cuts, planning procedure, and getting
tools in the student’s hands. Students have started building floors and walls to the sheds that we’re building
this semester. Overall the class has done a great job of following directions and applying what we’ve
learned.
CAD/CAM: Students have been creating various drawings using AutoCAD. Students are required to com-
plete 12 drawings which include different layers, multi view drawings, dimensioning, and isometric drawings
before they allowed to design and draw a salmon that we will be cutting out on the CNC plasma cutter.
Once the salmon is cut out we will be going through the process of buffing the cold rolled steel and bluing it
with a propane torch. An advanced student has already completed his fish, both he and his classmates are
pretty excited with the end result. After the CNC plasma cutter we will be working through some more
drawings and then designing a drawing which we will use the laser to cut/engrave on wood or acrylic.
The pictures below were cut out on a CNC plasma cutter from previous CAD/CAM classes.
