Legal Update

What’s Happening in HRBy Michael F. Weiner,NSHRM Legislative Director OSHA Issues New Covid-19 GuidanceOn June 17, 2020, OSHA issued new guidance entitled “Guidanceon Returning to Work”, which supplements in previous guidanceon preparing workplaces for Covid-19. The Guidance explains thatit is not a standard or regulation, but contains recommendations.

Of course, these recommendations should be taken seriously. OSHA recommendspractical considerations for operating business and while the circumstances surroundingthe virus are ever-changing, the guidelines are very useful and should be considered byyour company. Very helpful is OSHA’s FAQ section. The guidance can be found here:https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA4045.pdf

EEOC Updates its Covid-19 Guidance On June 17, 2020, the EEOC updated its information on What You Should Know AboutCovid-19 and the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, ad Other EEO Laws. This documentcontains a wealth of information for employers operating their businesses during thepandemic. For example, the EEOC agrees that an employer may choose to administerCOVID-19 testing to employees before they enter the workplace to determine if they havethe virus, but may not require an antibody test. The guidance can be found here: What-you-should-know-about-covid-19-and-ada-rehabilitation-act-and-other-eeo-laws

A look back at June's Professional Development Meetings

Thank you to our presenters, Louisiana SHRM, Dima Ghawi and our very ownCece Boudreaux representing NSHRM.

At the beginning of the month Louisiana SHRM hosted, Getting Comfortable HavingUncomfortable Conversations in the Workplace

Whitney Breaux moderated a LIVE panel discussion on how business leaders canparticipate, navigate and facilitate uncomfortable conversations in the workplace.

The purpose and goal of the discussion was to be a resource to business owners, leaders, managers and employees at all levels on how to have, what may be an uncomfortable andoften shied away from, conversation about race relations in the workplace.

Suggestions were given on how to start the conversations, talking points, various pointsof views, as well as takeaways that can be implemented in the workplace immediatelywith ongoing action steps.

We also saw in June, CityBusiness begin a weekly series of webinars to help NewOrleans-area businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Titled “Road to Recovery – Reopening Your Business” guiding businesses to create newpolicies and procedures, protect business from liability and everything in between. Ourvery own NSHRM President, Cece Boudreaux was joined by Jerry Bologna, president &CEO of JEDCO, to share steps businesses could take to successfully return.

So many programming options held in June. Time for a little summer break. This monthyou'll find a virtual happy hour in our HR Therapy to be held on June 16th andopportunity to grow professionally by gaining your HR credentials by registering for theSHRM CP/SCP Prep Classes.
