“And w
hen you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites,
for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by
others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
17But when you fast, anoint your head and w
ash your face, 18that your fasting m
ay not be seen by others but by your Father who is
in secret. And your Father w
ho sees in secret will rew
ard you.”
Matthew
6:16-18
Read M
atthew 6:16-18
What is fasting?
Richard
Foster defines
fasting in
his book
Celebration
of D
iscipline as
“the voluntary
denial of
an otherw
ise norm
al function
for the
sake of
intense spiritual
activity.” I
would
agree w
ith m
ost of
that definition,
but I
think the
qualifier “intense” causes us to think the discipline of fasting is for the “super-spiritual” or the “extra-C
hristian.” That is not the case. Similar to the rest
of the sermon, Jesus is speaking to the heart behind the action, revealing
His values, and is not just calling us to action, but acknow
ledging an expectation for all C
hristians.
What do you think of w
hen you think of fasting? H
ave you heard anyone teach on fasting before? H
ave you ever fasted?
In my experience, C
hristians are quick to ignore fasting. We can get
behind giving and praying. Maybe that is because those feel better than
intentionally going without food or drink or a com
mon pleasure.
Do you think w
e ignore fasting? If yes, why do you think it is often a
forgotten discipline? If no, how do you see C
hristians fasting today?
In these verses, Jesus again places a value on humility (like w
e talked about on W
ednesday night). Fasting is a physical way that w
e are embodying
spirituality and being holistically transformed by C
hrist. Obviously there
are right and wrong w
ays to fast. Jesus gives an example of each.
What are som
e characteristics of fasting the right and wrong w
ays? “Fasting is the practice of increasing our concentration for the purpose of hearing G
od in our lives. The practice of fasting should be employed the
most at tim
es in which w
e feel we can hear G
od the least.” (Matt M
ead - Serm
on on the Mount)
Close your study w
ith a prayer and plan your next time of fasting.
Jesus began this part of the Sermon on the M
ount saying, “Beware of
practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them
, for then you will have no rew
ard from your Father w
ho is in heaven” (M
atthew 6:1). H
e then gave several illustrations of this: giving to the needy, praying, and fasting. Read M
atthew 6:16-18.
There is no specific comm
and to fast in the worship of G
od, yet fasting w
as a comm
on response by the person seriously seeking after God.
The basic purpose of the fast is a demonstration of the hum
ility of the one fasting in their dependence upon G
od. The word translated “fast”
means to voluntarily abstain from
food. There were different kinds
of fasts and they varied in their practice. The Mishna records that the
practice during the day of atonement w
as abstaining from all food and
water. There w
ere also partial fasts such as that of Daniel and his three
friends in which they abstained from
the king’s food and wine and
had only vegetables and water.
As w
ith any godly activity, even fasting can miss the point. The
Scribes and Pharisees lost sight of the purpose of fasting and saw it as
a demonstration of their superior righteousness. Luke 18:12 records
the boastful prayer of a Pharisee, “I fast twice a w
eek.” Supposedly this w
as in comm
emoration of M
oses going up on Mount Sinai on
Thursday and coming dow
n on Monday. Yet it is w
orth noting that their fasting happened to correspond w
ith the two m
ajor market days
of the week w
ith the largest crowds. This devotional form
at does not allow
for a thorough study of fasting, though that would be w
orthwhile
for any follower of Jesus.
• Jesus m
entioned giving to the needy, praying, and fasting, but that is not to say these are the only w
ays. What else m
ight become
hijacked by our pride as a demonstration of our ow
n righteousness?
• W
e all want to be a good exam
ple and for others to think well of us.
So, how do w
e remain pure in heart in our obedience to G
od and not succum
b to obsessing over impressing others or in any w
ay be less than authentic? W
hat is the answer?
• Think for a m
oment, if som
ething as sacrificial as fasting can becom
e corrupt, what is the m
essage we need to learn?
Close in prayer.
