Early Life [1]

• He was born on March 16, 1911 in Gunzburg, Germany to Karl and Walburga Mengele.

• Earned Ph.D. in Physical Anthropology from the University of Munich (studies physical development of the human species).

• He was an assistant to Dr. Otmar von Verschuer (scientist known for his research with twins).

• In 1937, he joined the Nazi party and in 1938, he joined the SS. [3]

• He was named the SS garrison physician of Auschwitz. [1]

• Probably joined the Nazi party because of: – Interest in racial differences– Status– Fear

Experimentation on Twins• Were put in separate barracks [2]• “We would have to sit naked…people in white

jackets would observe…They would photograph, measure our heads and arms and bodies, and compare the measurements of one twin to another.” (Echoes from Auschwitz, Kor). [8]

• After measurements, they would take the blood of the twins, and then they were given shots. [4]

• After various experiments and surgeries, Mengele would kill and dissect the twins. [4]

• Known as the “Angel of Death”• If destroying the lives of many twins in

Auschwitz wasn’t bad enough, Mengele performed a broad range of lethal experiments with Jews and Gypsies.

• Obsession with his “patients eyes”.• Also injected several hundred different diseases

to see effects.• Open surgeries.

• After Auschwitz, fled to a different southern concentration camp.

• Then fled from there and was captured by Americans, but was then later released.

• Fled to South America(Brazil) to attempt to live in peace and harmony. *Mustache Death*

• Changed his name to Wolfgang Gerhard • In a diary found, it said that he had no regrets.• After over 30 years of running , he finally died on

February 7th 1979
