The2019FestivalisthethirdwithCanadianviolinistJonathanCrowatthehelmintheroleofArtisticDirectorforTorontoSummerMusic.CrowiswellknowntoTSMaudiencesandartists;hehasmentoredyoungmusiciansintheTSMAcademyandperformedasaguestartistinnumerousTSMconcertsforsixyearspriortohisappointmentasArtisticDirectorin2017.AnativeofPrinceGeorge,BritishColumbia,JonathancurrentlyresidesinTorontowherehehasservedasConcertmasteroftheTorontoSymphonyOrchestrasince2011.HeearnedhisBachelorofMusicinHonoursPerformancefromMcGillUniversityin1998,atwhichtimehejoinedtheMontrealSymphonyOrchestraasAssociatePrincipalSecondViolin.Between2002and2006JonathanwastheConcertmasteroftheMontrealSymphonyOrchestra;duringthistimehewastheyoungestconcertmasterofanymajorNorthAmericanorchestra.Jonathancontinuestoperformasguestconcertmasterwithorchestrasaroundtheworld,includingtheNationalArtsCentreOrchestra,PittsburghSymphony,MahlerChamberOrchestra,FilarmoniadeLanaudiereandPernambucoFestivalOrchestra(Brazil).JonathanhasperformedasasoloistwithmostmajorCanadianorchestrasincludingtheMontreal,TorontoandVancouverSymphonyOrchestras,theNationalArtsCentreandCalgaryPhilharmonicOrchestras,theVictoria,NovaScotiaandKingstonSymphonies,andOrchestraLondon,underthebatonofsuchconductorsasCharlesDutoit,SirYehudiMenuhin,SirAndrewDavis,PeterOundjian,KentNagano,MarioBernardiandJoãoCarlosMartins.In2005,JonathanjoinedtheSchulichSchoolofMusicatMcGillUniversityasanAssistantProfessorofViolinandwasappointedAssociateProfessorofViolinin2010.CurrentandformerstudentsofMr.Crowhavereceivedprizesatcompetitionsaroundtheworld,includingtheMenuhinInternationalViolinCompetition,MontrealSymphonyOrchestraCompetition,SheanCompetition,CBCRadio’sNEXTcompetition,Eckhardt-GrammatteCompetition,CanadianMusicCompetition,andStulbergInternationalStringCompetition,andworkregularlywithorchestrassuchastheNationalArtsCentreOrchestra,CamerataSalzburg,KonzerthausorchesterBerlin,VerbierChamberOrchestra,ViennaKammerphilharmonieandViennaSymphonyOrchestra.JonathaniscurrentlyAssociateProfessorofViolinattheUniversityofToronto.Anavidchambermusician,JonathanhasperformedatchambermusicfestivalsthroughoutNorthAmerica,SouthAmericaandEuropeincludingtheBanff,Ravinia,Orford,DomaineForget,Seattle,Montreal,Ottawa,IncontriinTerradiSienna,Alpenglow,FestivalVancouver,Pernambuco(Brazil),Giverny(France)andStringsintheMountainsfestivals.HeisafoundingmemberoftheJunoAward-winningNewOrfordStringQuartet,aproject-basednewensemblededicatedtothepromotionofstandardandCanadianstringquartetrepertoirethroughoutNorthAmerica.AsanadvocateofcontemporarymusichehaspremieredworksbyCanadiancomposersMichaelConwayBaker,EldonRathburn,BarrieCabena,GaryKulesha,TimBrady,FrancoisDompierre,AnaSokolovic,MarjanMozetich,ChristosHatzis,ErnestMacMillanandHealeyWillan.HealsoincludesinhisrepertoiremajorconcertibysuchmoderncomposersasLigeti,Schnittke,Bernstein,BrianCherney,RodneySharman,VivianFungandCameronWilson.JonathanhasrecordedforATMA,Bridge,CBC,Oxingale,Skylark,andXXI-21labelsandisheardfrequentlyonChaîneCulturelleofRadio-Canada,CBCRadioTwo,andNationalPublicRadio,alongwithRadioFrance,DeutscheWelle,HessischerRundfunkandtheRAIinEurope.
