“Sharing God’s
Love Through
Following
Christ’s
Example”
I recently encountered an article which discussed what the author called the prob-lem of two Christianities. He contrasted the perspectives of both extremely conservative and liberal Christians, and observed that those holding these extreme views tended to be very critical of those with whom they disagreed. In fact, some on both sides even had the temerity to assert that those that disagreed with their viewpoints could not even be Chris-tians! My response to this situation is to paraphrase James 3:10, “My brethren, these things ought not to be!”
We who claim Jesus as Savior and follow him are to accept and love each
other, even when we disagree on important political and theological issues. Here are a couple of ideas I think would be helpful to any Christian considering the challenge of ac-cepting, loving, and working with Christians who may disagree with them on social and biblical issues.
First of all, we must accept the biblical truth that one’s salvation is not determined by a perspective on a current social issue. Salvation is determined only by one’s relation-ship with Jesus Christ! The Apostle Paul said it like this, “But you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” (I Cor. 6:11) God’s grace at work through Jesus’ death on the cross makes it possible for us to respond to God’s Spirit, and receive the gift of forgiveness and eternal life. What you believe about abortion, the building of a wall on our southern bor-der, or even our current president will not be discussed when we stand before God; only the presence of your name in what the Bible calls “the Book of Life,” (Phil. 4:3) will be dis-cussed. In spite of our convictions on the otherwise important issues of our day, let us remember this essential Christian truth!
One other Christian truth is that we must not allow our current culture’s roller-coaster of belief and practice to affect our own faith-convictions and practices! Biblical teachings are eternal and unchanging, and are worthy of our consideration and applica-tion to this life. Christians have made the mistake of following cultural trends over biblical teaching in the past: Consider what we now understand regarding the Inquisition in the middle ages; slavery in our nation’s recent history; and current experimentations in the areas of family and human sexuality. Whenever we choose culture over biblical truth, we all suffer!
I want to encourage you to take your faith seriously, and allow God to guide you in every area of life. He alone is worthy!

1896 Sanctuary Update The 1896 Task Force met January 14, 2019. The structural review and recommendations by Wallace Engineering were discussed. Wallace Engineering and Urban Realty Interests performed a set of reviews of the existing First Baptist Church 1896 Sanctuary structure. The building is currently stable, but at this time it is recommended that it should not be used for services or other purposes until further investigative work and possible stabilization has been performed. Three recommendations were given and each have a significant cost factor. As a final part of determin-ing a course of action, the desired long term plans of First Baptist Church must be considered. Each of the listed alternative solutions carries with it the option for the congregation to either retain full unencumbered ownership, lease, and/or sell all or part of the existing sanctuary space. A report will be given at the January 27, 2019 First Baptist Church Business Meeting. Copies of the review from Wallace Engineering and Urban Realty Interests are available by request through the church office.
