HANDtoHAND Campaign: reducing unmet need for family planning

by 100 million new users by 2015

The price tag of failing to address unmet need for family planning:

53 million unwanted pregnancies 390,000 maternal deaths 1.6 million newborn deaths 14.5 million unsafe abortions

The deadlock: unmet need for family planning since 1995

Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health

Country-led health plans, supported by increased, predictable and sustainable investment

Integrated delivery of health services and life-saving interventions

Access prevention, treatment and care Stronger health systems, with skilled health workers. Innovative approaches to financing, product

development and efficient health service delivery Improved monitoring and evaluation to ensure the

accountability of all actors for results.

Reducing unmet need by 100 million new users will mean:

56 million fewer unintended pregnancies 54 million fewer abortions 110,000 fewer mothers dying in pregnancy and

childbirth 1.4 million fewer infant deaths meeting the family planning needs of 80% of

all women in low- and middle-income countries
