The Job Search Survival Kit – Job Search And LinkedIn Tips. Part 31

Getting The Upper Advantage No Matter The OddsBy: Anthony Hines

A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

Step By Step By Step By Step.

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe you should do when trying to job search in the summer months when it is easy to lose your focus.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Balance your time. Yes, make sure that you don’t just job

search. Use the summer months to also get physically active and energized.

Don’t sit all day on a computer applying for jobs. The summer will go by and you will be angry that you missed it.

Make time for you!

Going to a cookout? Make sure that you talk about the fact that you are looking for a job. OMG, I can’t tell you how many people feel ashamed that they are looking and don’t get the word out. That is a huge mistake. No one can help you if they do not know that you are out of work so bring your business cards and network as you see fit.

Get involved in community events that have a lot of local visibility and many people involved. Things like say the 4th of July parade committee. There is an example of a popular event that can only help you get to meet people. Hey, you have time so this is a great way to use it.

How about a road race in your town or local area? Think about it, many people who run have many contacts in the running world and those people have jobs and maybe know of openings. Help to organize a road race. Face it, active people are very successful so meet them. Helping to organize a local road race is a way to do that.

How about a tour guide? You know how cities have historical or ghost or movie tours and they are always looking for people to do them? Maybe you can do that.

Think about all of the people that you will meet. Plus you will learn about whatever you are doing the tours about. No lose right?

Does your town have a community cleanup day? Do they need volunteers for that? Do they need people to help organize an event like that?

Again, think of all the people that you will meet. Isn’t that networking?

Summer Job Searching Unfiltered

Ok this may not be for everyone but not at everything I say is. How about being a life guard at a beach, pool or area where people swim. You will meet a lot of people and you can learn important skills like CPR and other life saving processes which are always important no matter what you do. Yes, it is not for everyone, but if you are so inclined. Why not?

Load up your calendar with people you will meet for coffee or for lunch.

Yes people will be going on vacation and be busy but everyone will use any excuse possible to get outside so give them that excuse and offer to meet with them.

Check the weather and make sure you know the best days and maybe work to get the calendar more full on those days.

Summer Job Searching Unfiltered

Some cities have volunteer Park Rangers that patrol the local open spaces and give tours in that realm. Plus you will spend a lot of time outdoors naturally which is never a bad thing.

Another way to meet people. See a general tone here?

Summer Job Searching Unfiltered

How about your local country club? Do they have events during the summer that they need organized or volunteers for?

Golf or tennis tournaments?

Think about who you will be meeting in that case? Who plays golf and tennis? Maybe these people know people who know people…..

Summer Job Searching Unfiltered

How about out on the water? There are many cruises that take place in rivers if inland or in the ocean if you are in a coastal. Now remember, people come and go all the time in that area so openings may come about at anytime. Maybe worth checking into. You will come into contact with a lot of people. Why not look into?

Want to know the newest hot career thing?

Food trucks. They are popular now and they do not have the negative perception that they used to have.

Plus, companies have food truck events so they bring you to their parking lots so you can meet people in your normal sales day and through private events. Think about the possibilities here plus you will make money. You may never want a job again. Many people are doing it and some do so well that they never get a job again.

People will be travelling a lot this summer right?

How about driving for UBER? Laugh all you want. Some people are making big money doing it so why can’t you.

Plus, you never know who you are going to get to drive for.

Summer Job Searching Unfiltered

People will be on vacation a lot this summer right?

How about offering to be their backup while they are away. Great way to learn skills.

Plus, you never know where that can lead.

Summer Job Searching Unfiltered

Consulting for short term projects could also be an avenue for you.

Maybe work a deal with someone you know who needs summer help keeping a project going as the team may have limited availability. You never know where that could lead.
