POLITICS• Became Georgia’s 76th governor in 1971.• Served as chairman of the Southern Regional

Education Board, the Appalachian Regional Commision, the Coastal Plains Regional Action Planning Commision, and the Southern Growth Policies Board.

• Became Democratic National Committee campaign chairman for the 1974 congressional elections.

• Won Democratic party nomination at the 1976 Democratic National Convention and was elected President on November 2,1976.

• Served as President from January 20,1977 to

January 20,1981.
