N-subjettiness

β€’ Given N subjet axes in a fat jet, N-subjettiness, πœπ‘ , is given by

β€’ πœπ‘ =1

𝑑0 π‘˜ 𝑝𝑇,π‘˜min{βˆ†π‘…1,π‘˜ , βˆ†π‘…2,π‘˜ , … , βˆ†π‘…π‘,π‘˜}

β€’ βˆ†π‘…π‘,π‘˜ is the angular separation between constituent k and candidate subjet N

β€’ 𝑑0 is a normalization factor given by 𝑑0 = π‘˜ 𝑝𝑇,π‘˜π‘…0 , so 0 ≀ πœπ‘ ≀ 1

β€’ 𝑅0 = 0.8 for AK8 clustering

Low π‰πŸ (constituents close to subjet axes)

High π‰πŸ (consitutents spread out)

Clusters with exactly Nsubjets will have small πœπ‘

If πœπ‘ β‰ˆ 1, cluster most likely has more than Nsubjets

N-subjettiness

β€’ When comparing N-subjetiness with (N+1)-subjettiness, adding extra candidate subjet allows minimum angular separation to decrease

β€’ Thus, in most cases, 𝜏1 > 𝜏2 > 𝜏3.

β€’ Ratio πœπ‘π‘€ = πœπ‘/πœπ‘€, where N=M+1, is useful

π‰πŸ‘π‰πŸ >

Clusters with small πœπ‘π‘€ most likely have N subjets.

We can use this quantity for cuts.

Q-jets Volatility

β€’ Associate clustering history (β€œtree”) with jetsβ€’ Depending on the route (AK8-like, CA8-like, etc.)

taken to get a jet, the mass can change, so you get a mass distribution for a jet when considering the space of possible trees

β€’ For a pruned jet mass distribution, define

volatility as 𝑉 =π‘š2 βˆ’ π‘š 2

βŸ¨π‘šβŸ©β€’ Physically, dependence of jet mass on clustering

method governs volatility (large mass fluctuations over different algorithms/routes means the jet is volatile/fuzzy)

Jet Toolbox

β€’ Jet toolbox available at https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/viewauth/CMS/JetToolboxβ€’ Takes miniAOD (or AODSIM) and adds various substructure branches

β€’ ~0.1 Hz for miniAODminiAOD+substructure

β€’ For AK8, it includes:β€’ Q-jets Volatility

β€’ N-subjettiness (𝜏1, 𝜏2, 𝜏3)

β€’ Masses of pruned, trimmed, filtered jets

β€’ Top-tagged jet massβ€’ If an ungroomed jet is matched to top-tagged jet, this branch is filled with the jet mass

Current Setup

β€’ Have 10k-event T2tt sample from Alex (mstop = 850, mLSP = 100)

β€’ Added β€œSubJetMaker” to CMS3 makers, which adds substructure variables from toolboxed miniAOD

β€’ Preliminary distributions of substructure variables followβ€’ Working on meaningful distributions in my previous framework, along with

same plots with AK8 instead of AK5
