Mirror Practice is the result of Jelena Telecki’s consideration and response to myths and stories about artists and the way

that these ideas shape the way we understand and experience art works. Telecki examines how an artist’s persona that is imagined, rehearsed and performed often carries the main

reading of an individual artwork. In Mirror Practice the artist has focused on Joseph Beuys and his ‘shaman-like’ presence and narrative that was often clearly articulated in his work, in

particular the piece Explaining pictures to dead hare.

Telecki simultaeneously references the studio of Francis Bacon and often circulated images of his studio littered

with paint, canvases, brushes and whiskey bottles. Here it can be seen that the place where Bacon’s paintings are created embody who the artist was as a person - they are

characteristic of both a narrative and the painter.

A selection of the paintings in mirror practice feature portraits and still-lives that literally, or formally, ‘mirror’ each other

and re-focus the contents and the viewer on the nature of the artist, while smaller works look at the artist’s own life and

memories.
