NDL aims to promote the use of Linked Data and provides metadata as Linked Data

The main topic of this presentation

The National Diet LibraryDublin Core Metadata Description(DC-NDL)

9

2. What is the DC-NDL?

10

The DC-NDL is

• A descriptive metadata standard• Utilized primarily for converting catalog

records of publications held by the NDL into metadata

• Based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set and the DCMI Metadata Terms

A Brief History• Revised three times since launch

14

3. Features of the DC-NDL

15

The key functions of the DC-NDL:

1. Representing the yomi (reading) of the Japanese language: for accommodating certain unique features of the Japanese language

2. Connectivity with Linked Data: for maintaining the broad perspective of linking tothe world's data

3. Compatibility with digitized materials: for accommodating NDL activities

16

3.1. Representing reading ofJapanese language

17

Japanese language has threedistinct types of characters

All of these words are read as "i-chi-go (strawberry)“

: ‘hiragana’

: ‘katakana’

: ‘kanji’

18

Some words have several different readings

su-i-ka

ni-shi-u-ri(watermelon)

Watermelon in Japanese could be read as either"su-i-ka" or "ni-shi-u-ri"

19

Reading varies depending upon meaning

ga-ku

hi-ta-i

The word “ ” could be read as either“ga-ku“ or “hi-ta-i“

20

: “ga-ku”(frame)

: “hi-ta-i”(forehead)

21

Without spaces inserted between words, it is difficult to understand meaning

22

"Koko-de-wa-kimono (means ‘clothes’)-wo-nuide-kudasai"

"Koko-de-hakimono (means ‘shoes’)-wo-nuide-kudasai"

(Case 1)

(Case 2)

23

DC-NDL defines metadata terms to represent characteristics of the Japanese language

→ E.g. Title field

24

(1)DC-NDL defines original properties such as Transcription

Extract data from Bibliographic Information

25

(2)Value stored in Transcription property is sentence with blanks between words

Extract data from Bibliographic Information

26

(3)Title representation and reading described as a set, using dc:title in its range

Extract data from Bibliographic Information

27

3.2. Connectivity with Linked Data

28

DC-NDL uses URI values to link with other data

→ E.g. creator and subject

29

VIAF

Bibliographic data

Example of link to "dcterms:creator"

30

A Web NDL Authorities’ link to VIAF

VIAF

31

Example of using URIs in "dcterms:subject"

URI of the Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC)9th edition

<dcterms:subject rdf:resource="http://id.ndl.go.jp/class/ndc9/210.02"/>

URI of the National Diet Library Classification (NDLC)<dcterms:subject rdf:resource="http://id.ndl.go.jp/class/ndlc/GB38"/>

32

Example of link to "dcterms:subject"

LCSH

Bibliographic data

33

A Web NDL Authorities’ link to LCSH

LCSH

34

3.3. Compatibility with digitized materials

35

DC-NDL defines metadata terms to describe digitized contents

36

Example of terms for digitized content

Description of the publisher of the digitized version<dcndl:digitizedPublisher>National Diet Library</dcndl:digitizedPublisher>

Date when the content was digitized<dcndl:dateDigitized>2013</dcndl:dateDigitized>

37

4. Using DC-NDL:NDL Search

38

What is NDL Search?

http://iss.ndl.go.jp/ 39

NDL, public libraries, academic libraries, archives, museums, and academic research institutions in Japan

A gateway to rich repository of information

42

5. Future plans for the DC-NDL

43

For connecting more data:

We need more connections to other links • We must examine which elements are

appropriate for linking with other data and which URIs are suitable to include in our data

• We need to identify data that can be linked with ours
