“I love Japan Society. Where
else in America can you find so
much about Japan under one
roof: fine arts and pop enter-
tainment, nihon-go lessons,
hard-to-find flicks, and lectures
and panels on topics ranging
from financial regulation to the
super flat aesthetic of takashi
Murakami. And as a parent,
I appreciate the family events,
too. What’s more, it’s great
for networking.”

supported by individuals, foundations and corporations
that brings the people of Japan and the united states
closer together through mutual understanding, appreci-
ation and cooperation. more than a hundred years after
the society’s founding in 1907, its goal remains the same—
the cultivation of a constructive, resonant and dynamic
relationship between the people of the u.s. and Japan.

preSident’S MeSSage
on June 9, 2010, Japan society welcomed wilbur l. ross, Jr. , chairman and ceo of
wl ross & co. llc, as our new chairman of the board. we extend our heartfelt
thanks to david w. heleniak, who served as interim chair and headed the search
committee responsible for mr. ross’s appointment.
this has been a busy and productive year for Japan society, with a full comple-
ment of lectures, symposia, exhibitions, performances, screenings, classes, family
events and business programs, focused on the very cutting edge of Japanese cul-
ture and society. a new, society-wide programming initiative galvanized the tal-
ent and energy of our entire staff to produce the day-and-night-long J-cation,
offering a taste of Japan to new yorkers of all ages. in the coming year, we will
be presenting more innovative and exciting programming of this kind. stay tuned!
2010 also marked two important anniversaries in the history of u.s.-Japan
relations. it was 150 years ago that Japan sent its first diplomatic mission
to the united states aboard the Kanrin Maru . and, 50 years ago, Japan and
the united states signed a new treaty of mutual cooperation and security,
enhancing stability and prosperity in east asia.
Japan society’s mission continues to be that of fostering cooperation and
understanding between the people of Japan and the united states. we do this
on many different levels, but we could not do so without your generous
support. thank you.

“I love Japan Society. Where
else in America can you find so
much about Japan under one
roof: fine arts and pop enter-
tainment, nihon-go lessons,
hard-to-find flicks, and lectures
and panels on topics ranging
from financial regulation to the
super flat aesthetic of takashi
Murakami. And as a parent,
I appreciate the family events,
too. What’s more, it’s great
for networking.”
