Advancing K-State 2025 Planning: An Update

• Launched the University Visionary Plan • K-State 2025 requires commitment to

planning/holding ourselves accountable at all levels

• Announced initiatives to:– Align university/college/major unit/departmental

planning – Further define university metrics beyond the

benchmarks to track progress on our thematic goals

• Principles and strategic action planning and alignment template developed to guide process

• Initial plans submitted by Deans/VPs after engaging in their own planning processes (May 2012)

• Plans reviewed individually and together at fall retreat– determined alignment between university and college plans

needed to be strengthened before undertaking departmental planning

– identified university metrics for thematic goals for use in further planning

• Final college/major units plans submitted (Dec. 2012)

• Why additional university metrics for thematic goals?– The Visionary Goal benchmark metrics are

important measures but not our only measures of success.

– Everyone has a role to play in moving K-State toward 2025.

–We needed additional metrics to track progress to achieving each thematic goal and outcomes.

–We identified the need for more quantitative outcomes in College plans.

• Must work for your unit – reflect where you want to go as a department

• Should align with your college/major unit and university plans

• Goal setting comprehensive in scope• Involve faculty, staff, students, and alumni in departmental planning –

this should not be done by just the department head• Be inclusive of all levels• Quantitative measures for outcomes• Use Web tools to aid collaboration

• Will translate into operational plans • Relates to budget, staffing, and evaluation

Additional Comments • Some departments have existing plans – we want to be

sure that all of the plans are aligned with K-State 2025.

• Avoid the "I will do X if the university gives me Y" types of goals and outcomes. While the plans will be used for resource allocations, each plan needs to have quantitative deliverables which represent stretch goals for each program.

• There is no such thing as a PERFECT plan – do the best you can with the full involvement of everyone – and you can modify as your unit has successes and achievements.

K-State 2025– Vision = Where you are going

2. Your key strategic activities and outcomes– Activities = What you plan to do –Outcomes = What you expect to happen– Focus on key directions, not everything you do– Be sure include key priorities that will require

What your plan should include• Key outcomes can be both qualitative and

quantitative– Include quantitative outcomes phrased as

performance targets, using specific “from-to” ranges where possible, i.e., “increase the number of PhDs awarded from X to Y”

– Consider the university metrics and nationally relevant metrics when developing quantitative outcomes
