Trigger and Reconfigure Opening Reception. 4:45pm. Jewett Art
Gallery.
A work of art begins with an encounter between an object or image and the
artist. The found form, not necessarily interesting or beautiful to others, is so
compelling to the artist that it must be engaged with, seized. Intuitively the
artist understands the possibilities this form offers for reinvention. The making
of art is a dialogue-grappling, coaxing, and nudging of form until a new light or
life emerges. For more information at the arts at Wellesley College, visit

THEATER WELLESLEY COLLEGE thursday, jan 6 - sunday, jan 30. The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Varying Times. Ruth Nagel Jones Theater
In this second play by the author of Driving Miss Daisy, a family of Jewish southerners tries to come to grips with its identity in a pre-WWII Christian society. This story drives home the lesson that without a strong sense of self, one’s place in the existing social structure can constantly change or even cease to exist at all. In 200,000 years on Earth, humanity has upset the balance of the planet,
established by nearly four billion years of evolution. The price to pay is high,
but it's too late to be a pessimist: humanity has barely ten years to reverse the
trend, become aware of the full extent of its spoliation of the Earth's riches
and change its patterns of consumption.
By bringing us unique footage from over fifty counties, all seen from the air, by
sharing with us his wonder and his concern, with this film Yann Arthus-
Bertrand lays a foundation stone for the edifice that, together, we must
rebuild.

Babson Global Film Series: Our Daily Bread. 7pm. Carling-Sorenson Theater Dir. Nikolaus Geyrhalter (2006)
OUR DAILY BREAD reveals the little-known world of high-tech agriculture. In a series of visually stunning, continuously tracking, wide-screen images that seem right out of a science-fiction movie, we see the places where food is cultivated and processed: surreal landscapes optimized for agricultural machinery, clean rooms in cool industrial buildings designed for maximum efficiency, and elaborate machines that operate on a 'disassembly line' basis.
Dispensing entirely with explanatory commentary or 'talking-head' interviews, OUR DAILY BREAD unfolds on the screen like a disturbing dream: an endlessly fascinating flow of images, an insistent gaze, accompanied only by the persistent industrial soundtrack—whirring, clattering, booming, slurping—of the ingenious marvels of mechanization employed by agri-business.

While this remarkable documentary will likely engender fascination, awe and even shock amongst viewers, OUR DAILY BREAD simply aims to show the industrial production of food as a reflection of our society's values: plenty of everything, made as quickly and as efficiently as modern technology permits.
“A superbly realized feature, stirring together art and knowledge .”
The screening will include a brief introduction & a post-film discussion.
Free & open to the Babson community & the general public.
