KNOW THE WORD,

DO THE WORd

JAMES 1:19-2719 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

JAMES 1:19-2721 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

JAMES 1:19-2723 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

JAMES 1:19-2725 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

JAMES 1:19-2727 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

The Christian life is like two pedals on a bike. Know the word, do the

word. Know the word, do the word.

He’s going to teach us that we need to know the word of God and do the

word of God.

JAMES LEARNED

THIS FROM HIS BIG

BROTHER

LUKE 11:2828 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

KNOW THE WORD

IT STARTS WITH

KNOWING YOU’RE

GOD’S BELOVED

This establishes your identity, and out of your identity comes your

activity. Before he tells you what to do, he tells you who you are.

The result is that when we obey God, when we do what God tells us to do, we’re not working for the love of God, we’re working from the love

of God.

This is the difference between Christianity and other false religions.

It begins with the love of God. God can’t love you anymore, and no matter what you do, God won’t love you any less. And this changes our

obedience.

You’re beloved. His love is a gift, and then He speaks of a second gift that

God wants to give us and we need to receive, and it’s the word of God.

THE

IMPLANTED WORD

SAVES

God is like a gardener. God wants to take his word, and He wants to plant it in your soul so that there could be

life and fruit that proceeds out of your relationship with him.

“Know this: My love is a gift. “My word is a gift. “We’re going to

do something together that is wonderful, and your life is going to

change.”

5 WAYS TO RESIST GROWTH

(1)BE TALKATIVE

JAMES 1:19-2719 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

(2) BE A BAD LISTENER

(3)HAVE A SHORT FUSE

EXODUS 34:66 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,

(4) COMPROMISE AND BE A HYPOCRITE

(5)BE A KNOW-IT-ALL

DO THE

WORD

BE DOERS,

NOT HEARERS ONLY

FALSE

RELIGION

IS SELF-DECEIVED

God wants to bless you and the blessing comes with knowing and

doing the word of God.Not either/or. Both/and

He’s going to warn us about false religion, and he’s going to encourage

us toward true religion.

He says that false religion is marked by two things: self-deception and

forgetfulness.

Self-deception is where you think that because you know a lot, you’ve

changed.

The problem with self-deception: you don’t know that you’re self-

deceived. When you have deceived yourself, you are not the best person

to diagnose your self-deception.

False religion is marked by self-deception and forgetfulness.

FALSE

RELIGION FORGETS

TRUE

RELIGION

HELPS

THE MOST

VULNERABLE

He says that true religion is helpfuland it’s holy. And by helpfulness, it

includes keeping a reign on your tongue.

He says that it’s helpful to not cause harm through our words but instead

bring help through our deeds. That’s true religion.

That’s the Father heart of God and that’s the Father’s heart for all Hismen that pure religion is caring for

widows and orphans in their afflictions. It’s also holiness.

TRUE RELIGION

KEEPS ONESELF

UNSTAINED FROM

THE WORLD

We’re not in the kingdom of Godyet, that the kingdom of God is

before us and we’re like pilgrims, we’re like sojourners, we’re like

travelers.

GOD

SHOWED US

THE PLAN

ZECHARIAH 31 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of theLORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.2 The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”

ZECHARIAH 33 Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.4 The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”

ZECHARIAH 35 Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the LORD stood by.6 The angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua:

ZECHARIAH 37 “This is what the LORDAlmighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.

ZECHARIAH 38 “‘Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.

ZECHARIAH 39 See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.10 “‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”

How in the world could we walk through the world unstained?

REVELATION 12:1010 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.

Satan is the accuser of the children of God, that he accuses them day

and night. Satan is keenly aware of every stain that travels with you. It’s

your identity. You can’t cleanse yourself from it. You can’t hide it.

RELIGION SAYS

CLEAN YOUR

CLOTHES, JESUS

SAYS WEAR HIS

Some of you live under condemnation because all you

receive is accusation.

You know that the enemy is accusing you when you hear you. Some of you have heard it for so long you think it’s negative self-talk or low self-esteem. It might be demonic accusation. You’ve got to believe

this: You’re the beloved.

Jesus does not show up to accuse and condemn you. He shows up to

convict and save you.

‘SATAN, IT’S ALL

TRUE—THAT’S WHY

I WENT TO THE

CROSS’

Know this: You’re the beloved. And in your life, everything you do

should be motivated by knowing this.

You can walk through this world unstained because in Christ you’re

already clean, and when you do sin, Jesus will gladly clean you. He will gladly give you his righteousness.

He’ll gladly walk with you. He’ll never leave you.

He’ll never forsake you. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to

forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all of our unrighteousness.

1 JOHN 1:99 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

In Christ, you’re clean. The only way to walk through this life unstained is

to walk with Jesus. At this point, we need to know the word and

do the word.
