A meeting of importance to the Catho-lics of this city was held in St FrancisHall in the basement of the Cathedrallast Sunday night While the number ofpersons present was small their actionwill have an important bearing on thingsto come The few that did assemblewere and are in favor of a general meeting place or hall for Catholics a hall thatwould be large enough for the assemblage of fifteen or twenty thousand iifnecessary and equipped with a gym-nasium and swimming pool This matter has been under way for months Yearsago the same idea was taken upandpushed to a successful conclusion in citiesIn the East and North Several monthsago the Right Rev Bishop McCloskeYadvised a call of the clergy and laymen ofthe various congregations and submittedto them a proposition to build such ageneral meeting place He also offeredtolet them have a plot of ground eightyFeet wide on Walnut street betweenFourth and Fifth for the purpose oferecting this hall Meeting after meetIng was held but a unity of spirit wasnot exhibited Some thought the lotoffered by Bishop McCloskey as a site forthe new building was admirable whileothers considered it too small for thepurpose The Bishop in his propositionset forth that he would not deed theground to the Building Committee butwould retain the title to the property asBishop of Louisville This propositiondid not meet with the approval of thebusiness men who were supporting themovement For while they were willingto accept the word of the Bishop as amatter of business they preferred to erect-a building if erected at all on property-to which they bad a clear title And so

the matter dropped Meeting after meeting was held but nothing tangible resuited Last Sunday night a meetingwas held at which it was determined todo something practicable or else drop themovement altogether

Thomas P Walsh presided Abouttwentyfive gentlemen < representing thevarious parishes were present MrWalsh read a letter from the Right RevBishop withdrawing his offer of the siteon Walnut street A motion to adjournsine die was immediately made but encountered so much opposition that it waswithdrawn The opposition to the motionfor a final adjournment was in a greatmeasure brought about by the able effortof the Rev Father Henry C Connollypastor of St Brigids church He said

Mr Chairman and Gentlemen Let itnot be said that this movement can notbel made a succes Such expression isiunnecessary misleading without founda-

tion it retards and puts a hamper upon-ai noble work it plays into the hands ofour enemies and gives themnn oppor-tunity of criticising us it reflects uponmr people their generosity their spiritof sacrifice their intelligence theirstanding for be it understood that theCatholic element in this community isno more an insignificant thing but amost powerful factor a factor which hasalways responded to theappealsof char-ity which has always taken a deepntereet in the maintenance of churchesparochial schools homes for the agedhospitals for the stek and as we all

Mr Chairman and gentlemen onlyone thing is necessary to make tblsmovement a success That one thing Iisthis this movement must be placed on easolid basis It must be organized underthe auspices of the most correct andbusinesslike principles it must havethe sympathy and support of the mostthorough organization it must be madeclear to prominent influential and activemen that there is 110 reason why theyshould keep aloof from this movementThe great advantages which must neces-sarily accrue to the Catholic body lateron from the establishment of this assoclation must be allI explainedtpjourpcopl ll-

tion is almost absolutely necessary itwe are to retain our influence over outmen but especially over our young men

Now Mr Chairman and gentlemenall this I maintain can be accomplishedby placing this movement under theauspices of the Federation of CatholicSocieties with of course the approbation of ourTUght Reverend Bishop andthe good will and acceptance of theFederation itself

When however I suggest placing thismatter under the auspices of the Federation I do not mean to imply thereby thatthe funds which are absolutely necessaryfor the carrying out of our ideas in thismatter should be contributed exclusivelyby the Federation or what is the samething by the societies of which theFederation is composed Mr Chairmanand gentlemen I mean nothing of thekind What I do mean is this Let theFederation be made the head and thecenter of this movement let the managenient of all the business affairs of thisassociation be placed completely in itshands the church figuring only asregards spirituals Let the Federationhave the privilege and the power todevise ways and means whereby all thenecessary funds can be secured let theFederation itself contribute and contribute most generously toward this praiseworthy undertaking but let the FederaLion at the same time have the privilegeto go outside its own membership andcollect also from others Gentlementhis is what I mean by placing this movement under the auspices of the Federation of Catholic Societies

Let then this noble undertaking inSods holy name be established on thissolid basis and let the Catholics of thiscity see that it is so placed Let ourpeople be told that the Catholics of othercities have similar associations and aim

liar buildings that they take a greatinterest in the same and that they arepowerful factors for good Let our peo ¬

pIe be informed that their social Intellectual moral and religious interestsdepend in a great measure upon the suc-
