IT’S WILDFIRE SEASON!
It’s difficult to forget last year’s horrific fire season and it’s devastating impact on the lives of thousands of B.C.s citizens. July and August historically bring extreme heat and very dry conditions. We know that this kind of weather has a significant impact on how wildfires start, how aggressively they spread, and how long they will burn. Please remain aware of the current FIRE DANGER RATING (i.e. the risk of a wildfire starting) here in our fire zone (Coastal). Temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed and wind direction are recorded by approximately 260 fully automated weather stations in B.C. which send reports on an hourly basis. These hourly weather observations, together with data from other agency stations, support fire weather forecasting and the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS). The CFFDRS can assess ignition potential, spread and burning intensity. This data is transmitted to BC Wildfire Service headquarters every hour from April through October. For up-to-date information please go to https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status. You can also get information on fire bans & restrictions, current wildfire activity, wildfires of note as well as fire response efforts and the current fire danger rating. The FIRE DANGER RATING is updated daily at approximately 2 pm. Evacuation alerts and orders can sometimes come with very little warning. Prepare a “Go Kit” for yourself, your children and pets. For more information please visit: https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/
To report a wildfire or irresponsible behaviour call 1 800 663-5555 or *5555 from a cell phone. Information from the public is crucial to ensuring wildfires are responded to as quickly as possible.
Congratulations & Best Wishes to Boston Bar Elementary Secondary School’s

Lamb, David Gilbert November 8, 1948 – June 18, 2018
David passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan and spent most of his life in the Fraser Canyon near Boston Bar. He attended schools in Boston Bar and Hope and participated in boxing challenges, winning a Golden Gloves award. After graduating from Hope
Secondary, he moved to Tahsis where he met his wife of 49 years and worked as an apprentice mechanic in the mill. After moving back to the Fraser Canyon, he spent most of his career in the logging industry where he achieved an industrial first aid ticket and trumpeted for safety in the workplace. Dave’s later working years were in highway maintenance, from which he retired. His hobbies and interests included camping and fly fishing at many lakes across the province, tending to his large veg-etable garden, and current affairs. He also enjoyed travelling and went on trips throughout Canada including the Yukon and East Coast, Mexico and Venezuela. Dave was a gentle and honest man who believed in treating others with respect and humanity. He had a heart of gold and always looked for the good in everyone. He was always there to help others if they ever needed anything. As a devoted family man, he spent many hours teaching his grandchildren how to fish, play chess, chop wood and about life’s lessons. Dave was precious to all those that knew him and was a beloved brother, husband and father. Predeceased by his parents Georgina and Gib and brother Rick, Dave is survived by his loving wife Donna, son Rick (Tina) and grandchildren Gavin, Abby and Owen, daughter Amy, and beloved sisters Babs and Sharon (Marty). He is also lovingly missed by his nieces and nephews. Dave was greatly cherished and his passing leaves a large void in the hearts of family and friends; many thankfully had an opportunity to say goodbye to him. No memorial will be held; however, a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

From Terry Raymond, Director Electoral Area A
Another busy month has come and gone!
I have been on the road attending the usual monthly meetings of Regional Advisory & Electoral Area Services Committee, the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital Board and the Recreation and Airpark Commission. I also met with the Directors of Gold Country Community Services as well as Yale & District Historical Society. As well, I attended a meeting between the School Board and
Recreation Commission.
Closer to home, I was in attendance at the Landfill Socie-ty meeting, the BB-NB Bowling Association AGM and Boothroyd Healing Circle Ceremony. I was also honoured to officiate at a wonderful wedding and speak at BBESS's Graduation Ceremony. Another special occasion I attended was the Aboriginal Day/Wellness Event held
June 21st at Tuckkwiowhum Heritage Village.
Having met with share holders of the Boston Bar Hydro Plant (Scuzzy). I’m pleased to report that the plant will continue its operation despite the reduced rate paid by
BC Hydro.
I participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony (photo below) at the BB-NB Fire Department’s Grand Opening of their new 2-storey fire training facility (built from modified steel shipping containers) which is located in North Bend. If you missed this event, please ask a VFD member to show you this wonderful facility enabling fire training to be done right here in our community. It’s hoped the training
structure will be utilized by other communities that do not
have such a wonderful facility.
Regarding the Highline houses in North Bend, the Thurber Report has now been completed and I have stressed to Steve Deller that we expect work to resume
on the two houses. He has agreed.
I toured our area with Sheldon from the Ministry of Trans-portation and Infrastructure and pointed out a number of our citizens' concerns: road access to properties and businesses, drainage issues, the road safety issue in the Alpine Area, and repairs needed to Chaumox Road. He did express concern over the number of business signs being put up along the highway creating potential safety hazards. On a positive note, Sheldon stated the ministry will be bringing back a digital radar speed indicator board to Boston Bar. These indicators display motorists' speeds as they enter town and have proven effective in remind-ing drivers to reduce their speed. Also, I have been very
pleased to see that roadside mowing has begun.
In my "spare time" I have been working with Siska Indian
Band and Boston Bar First Nations.
In closing, I hope everyone will enjoy the warm summer
weather but please be FIRE AWARE.
If you have any questions about any of the above please contact me at 604-867-8891 or FVRD toll free at 1-800-528-0061.

Dear Business Owners, The government has recently announced a brief online consultation process with small businesses, to gather feed-back on issues that are affecting you. I encourage all small business owners to participate as this may be your only opportunity to let the NDP know your thoughts on taxes such as the Employer Health Tax, increases in the minimum wage, and other unique rural issues that impact your businesses.
The Employer Health Tax (EHT) will come into effect on January 1, 2019. If your payroll is over $500,000, you will be required to pay the EHT, and for those businesses that pay MSP for employees, you will also be paying 50 per cent of MSP premiums until January 1, 2020.
This tax is on top of the minimum wage increase to $12.65 that occurred on June 1st with further increases annual-ly, and the heightened carbon tax that is no longer revenue neutral and is increasing year after year. In addition to these increased costs, many of the businesses in our area are dealing with the aftermath of the Elephant Hill Wild-fire and the enormous impact that it had on their businesses.
Small businesses are the backbone of BC’s economy. They make up 98 per cent of businesses within the province and roughly 34 per cent of BC’s GDP. There is no question that the NDP’s tax changes will create untold negative
effects in our province.
I am urging you as business owners to complete the online survey and share your concerns with the tax increases and other issues impacting your businesses. The link to the survey is https://engage.gov.bc.ca/smallbusiness/ Thank you,
Jackie Tegart, MLA Fraser Nicola

C ongratulations to students, staff, family and community for working together to make the 2017/2018 school year a great success.
BBESS ended the year with another successful Camp Week running two Woods Shops, Moccasin/Regalia/Drum/Rattle Project completion and Grad/Leadership planning classes.
The younger students worked on coding, robotics and portrait/personal trait art projects. All students enjoyed swim lessons for a week at the Almer Carlson Pool and the Grades 4-7 attended an exciting track and field meet at Kent Elementary School.
Our final week was unbelievably busy beginning with the Learning Fair on Monday where all students displayed and discussed their creations, projects and academic achievements with family and friends.
Tuesday we had a wonderful time on the school field trip to Bridal Falls Water Park. It was great to have parents join us on this special day.
Wednesday the grades 7-12 travelled to Playland for their year end trip and Thursday we were very lucky to share in the Aboriginal Day Events at Tuckkwiowhum Village.
Our Boston Bar Dance and Drum Troupe (photo below) gave a beautiful opening performance, the students and staff learned a great deal of information regarding their health and wellness and we experienced an amazing lunch of wonderful traditional food.
We barely had the time to say a proper goodbye to our students so . . .
From the entire BBESS staff, we wish all families a safe, happy and healthy summer and we look for-ward to seeing you in September!

WE ARE GETTING ARRESTED! Well, it’s official. They got us. The other day our phone rang. The number was 01177828888888. We did not recognize it but we suspected that it was possibly a scam so for educational purposes, we answered it. Sure enough, the automated voice identified itself as a representative of the Canadian Revenue Agency. We owed taxes and if we did not pay immediately, we would be arrested! Hmm… As you can see, the fraudsters go after everyone and anyone and for that reason, it is important to be vigilant. If you get a call from an “agency” or even your family member, asking you for money, talk to someone about its validity. Ultimately, if unsure, come chat with us! FACEBOOK “Peas, Bees, Knees, Chees, Fleas…” This is an example of “Chinese Whisperers” or as it is known in North America, the “Telephone Game.” The premise behind the game is entertainment however if looked at it more in depth, you can see how rumours can quickly get out of control when utilized in real life. Try not to be part of it! The reality is that information on Facebook may have passed through several sources and by the time it ends up on Facebook, it is something completely different than the original message. Remember that different organizations work on strict privacy rules so if “this person” or “that person” said something, consider if that is actually what happened, whether there are privacy laws in play, and consider the source of the information. Chances are, there was some misunderstanding. Facebook can be a great resource but if used incorrectly, it can be a source of problems. WOULD YOU JUMP OFF A CLIFF? We read a study recently from Leeds University who had researched the theory of “Mob Mentality.” The scientists instructed a group of participants to walk in a room while staying few feet of each other and not communicating. A few actors were then insert-ed into the group and given special instructions to navigate the room in a snake-like single file line. It was found that 95% of the group decided to mimic the walking pattern of the specially instructed few. Interesting, isn’t it? Why are we mentioning this? Over the years, believe it or not, we have been called to a number of reports of groups assaulting another person. Our subse-quent investigation, on average, revealed that where the initial plan was for the fight to be one on one, it quickly escalated into a “group on one” fight. Now, we are not saying to have one-on-one fights. Please, do not fight at all! We are simply trying to raise awareness to this “Mob Mentality” and we want to remind everyone to be the 5% and think for themselves. Have a conversation with your family and children and be safe out there!
Cst. R. TUMBAS Do you have questions or concerns that you would like us to address or topics you would like us to write about in the next edition of the “Constable’s Corner?” Come chat with us or Karen TILLOTSON, the editor of the Boston Bar-North Bend Update Newsletter and tell us what you want to see in the upcoming editions of the “Constable’s Corner.“
