• Capital: Rome (The Eternal City)

Here is the Italian flag.

Colours of the flag

• The green stands for hope, love and joy.

• The white stands for faith, peace and honesty.

• The red stands for charity, bravery, strength and valour.

This is Rome. It is the capital city of Italy. The round building is called the Colosseum.

These are famous buildings that you will see in Rome.

This is the Colosseum. It is the most famous landmark in Rome.

The Vatican is a famous place in Rome because the Pope lives and works here.

• It is known as the city of canals.

• It’s built on 118 islands!

• To get around locals use gondolas or motor boats.

• There is an annual festival called Carnevale. It marks the end of lent and lasts 12 days!

Florence

• “Capital city” of Tuscany.

• Florence is famous for its architecture.

• Michelangelo was born near Florence.

• It is known as the art capital of Italy.

Opera music

• Opera music was born in Italy.

• An opera is like a play in which the characters sing all their lines.

• All operas have singers and an orchestra -- and a lot of operas have a chorus, too.

• Andrea Bocelli is a famous opera singer.

Tarantella dance

• Legend says that in the town of Taranto in southern Italy there was an epidemic. This was as a result of being bit by the poisonous tarantula spider.

• The victim (the tarantata) was almost always a woman. Once bitten the tarantata would fall into a trance that could only be cured by frenzied dancing.

• People would play music, each rhtyhm would cause the person to dance. Once the correct rhythm was found the tarantata was cured.

Italy have a very good football team.

Italy has many olive groves where they grow olives.

They use the olives to eat or to make

olive oil.

From Italy we also get pizza, pasta, cheese and wine. Yum!
