Reflection

When Jim Henson created the Muppets and Sesame Street, he became an immediate celebrity with adults and children world wide. His idea of using puppets and television to educate children has been

the best way for educating for over 39 years. Sesame Street is viewed in more than 170 countries all over the world. Who would

have ever thought that you can have fun while educating a child; Jim Henson the greatest teacher of all time did.

This PowerPoint was created for the beginning ESL learner in grades Pre-K-1. I was brought up by the African proverb, that “It takes a

Village to Raise a Child”. If people can teach our children, why can’t the characters from Sesame Street do the same. This PowerPoint presentation can be to first step to teaching students that have a

native language other than English.

The constructivist approach foster’s a critical way of thinking. They believe that their way of educating creates active and motivated

learners. When teaching young children it is imperative to embed information that they will need for their future education. For second language learners; it is more important that the information that they

are being taught is embedded right away.

As a teacher it will be my responsibility to be open and flexible to a new way of teaching. If it means small group and individual work,

then so be it. I chose to use Sesame Street, because I know that is what will get native English speakers and ESL/ELL students interested and engaged in the lesson. I also chose the Sesame Street has a way of speaking and teaching the youngest to the oldest child in all of us.
