Sue Cooke, GP IT Programme LeadLee Harrison, GP IT Programme Manager
Today’s session will consider…
‘How mature is General Practice IT and is it fit for the challenges ahead?’• Recognising the changing face of Primary Care • Benefits of utilising the Digital Primary Care Maturity
Assurance (DPC MA) tool • Consider how this tool can support CCGs, GPs & NHSE
Regional/DCO teams• Review the evidence – first view of the data/launched in
June 2016• Consider what other views/information would provide
useful insight – helping to ensure primary care is able to meet the challenges ahead?
Challenges Facing Primary Care
• General Practice is under pressure like never before:
• Aging population• Growing complexity of health needs• Resource and workforce challenges
• Future General Practice needs to be supported with the best modern digital services if successful & sustainable improvements in care are to be delivered
Changing Face of Primary Care
• In response to these growing pressures, fundamental changes taking place in primary care services in England, driven by policy & organisational pressures:

Using existing intelligence toinform Digital Maturity in Primary Care
26 indicators taken from HSCIC:• IGT Toolkit• POMI• Daily
Booking Reports
• GP2GP Utilisation report
31 indicators taken from eDEC
50 indicators asked to CCGs
Benefits of using this tool?• Provide assurance – GP IT Operating Framework, 2016/18• Help support CCG planning including:
• Inform the development of Local Digital Roadmaps (LDRs) and Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs), helping identify areas for further investment
• Enable comparison of digital maturity in Primary Care against secondary care, as highlighted in the Digital Maturity Index (DMI) assessment of secondary care
• Benchmark and compare digital maturity in GP IT• Support the re-procurement of GP IT services locally via the
Lead Provider Framework • Demonstrate progress against the digital requirements outlined within the
CCG Improvement and Assessment Framework
And for General Practice….
• ‘GMS’ digital commitments• Investment gaps in GP IT
services • Benchmark digital innovations• Support the case for change -
additional resource, services and/or investment
• Evidence base for CQC assessment
• Are you achieving universal services as identified in GP IT
The evidence so far…Year 1 for this tool – but already we are able to ….• Review progress against digital readiness criteria• Provide assurance against ‘core and mandated’ delivery
requirements in the GP IT Operating Model • Gain early insight into enhanced and transformational service
provision……• Support development of Local Digital Roadmaps

Multiple views within the tool:
• This view enables review across all practices within a CCG, with an applied Data Quality rating.
• Data Quality rating …….
• Hovering over the bars will provide GP Practice name and values as outlined on the next slide…..
Enhanced Primary Care IT Services
• Focussed on technologies, systems & support services which enable & improve efficiency and effectiveness of GP including primary care at scale.
• Supporting primary care at scale, extended hours working and confederated working

What next?
Year 1 – next steps
Year 1 - tool launched in June 2016:• Shortly to undergo the first quarterly refresh of data• Needs to grow/develop – if it is to continue to provide useful
insight and assurance on digital maturity as primary care continues to evolve
Next steps:• Key Learning – capture and build on this
• Identify issues• Development work
• Establish supportive governance arrangements e.g. Expert Reference Group
Support DevelopmentNeed to consider how we can develop this tool further to help ensure that primary care is able to meet the challenges ahead?
• Any early thoughts and feedback?
• What other views/information would provide useful insight for:• CCGs?• GPs?• NHSE Regional/DCO teams?
