Why is the iPad a game changer (for aviation)?

• Most iPad mapping apps offer entire US data sets for between $75 and $300 per year

• Encourages flying with full set of current, legal, and safe data• Relatively easy to download and use• An array of excellent apps available at reasonable prices for all

aviation activities from pre-flight planning to logbook managementaviation activities from pre flight planning to logbook management• Seamlessly integrates GPS and location based services• Device is expensive but…

N t k it l d i ( lik G i A Wh M t )– Not a cockpit only device (unlike Garmin, AnyWhere Map, etc.)– Read the newspaper, a book; watch TV/movies; edit a spreadsheet– Cost is spread across multiple activities

• It is spouse friendly• The iPad, Apps and Accessories are very stable

– Apple has very stringent policies for putting apps in the App storeApple has very stringent policies for putting apps in the App store

Which iPad?

• iPad v. iPad2 v. iPad3 “new iPad”– iPad2 – thinner and Dual-core A5 processor– Still available in 16GB version for $399 Wi-Fi or

$529 Wi-Fi+3g– iPad3 – Retina Display, 4G LTE, Dual-core A5X processor– Memory options are the same – 16, 32 and 64 GB

• Display differences– Retina display – 2048-by-1536-pixel resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)– Prior display – 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)Prior display 1024 by 768 pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

• WiFi v. 3G– 3G version has internal GPS, WiFi does not

3G ti ti t i d t GPS– 3G activation not required to use GPS• Recommendation: buy as much as you can afford• …but remember: they all get the job done• Shopping Tips – See Notes

Reliability• HeatHeat

– Only an issue if the screen is perpendicular to the sun– Glass acts like a magnifying glass to the internal electronics– Turn device over if in the sun and not in use

• GPS accuracy– Internal GPS (details on slide 32)

• Assisted GPS (A-GPS) improves fix time, uses Wi-Fi or cell tower geolocation; GPS still works if Wi-Fi and cellular are turned off

• Very good performance, 50’ accuracy or less horizontal and vertical• Issues with heated windscreen• Get a signal in the Apple store you should get one in your cockpitGet a signal in the Apple store you should get one in your cockpit• You may loose GPS signal if you stow the unit (e.g. side pocket) then

bring it back out, may take time to re-acquire fix– External GPS (more details on slide 18)

• Benefit: saves iPad battery, except Bad Elf• Use the Dual if you have heated windscreen

• Battery Life - ExceptionalIf l bl dd ld l t l– If only your bladder could last as long

– Easily 6 hours (conservative) at full screen brightness

Getting Apps for the iPad

• All applications come from the App Store• Applications are called “Apps”• Launch the App Store on the iPad or iTunes on your computerLaunch the App Store on the iPad or iTunes on your computer

and browse apps• Apps vary in price, many are free to try or use with limited features• Set up an Apple ID to download apps requires a credit card or gift card• Set up an Apple ID to download apps, requires a credit card or gift card

• Subscriptions for apps typically handled “in app” with the purchase being processed by the App StoreU i l A k b h• Universal Apps – work on bothiPad and iPhone

• iOS – the operating system forthe iPad (like MS Windows for PC’s)

Is it Legal to Fly with the iPad?

• Yes• Yes• FAA InFO 11011, 5/13/11: For part 91 operators other than 91K,

the use of an EFB in lieu of paper is the decision of the aircraft t d/ th il t i doperator and/or the pilot in command.

• FAA Safety Briefing; September/October 2011, Page 21: Do I Need Paper Back-ups? The FAA does not require you to carry

b t AC 91 78 t th t il t id dpaper, but AC 91-78 suggests that pilots consider a secondary source of aeronautical information. The secondary source could be a separate electronic display.AOPA G id• AOPA Guidance “The short answer is yes. AC 91-78 states that as long as the precomposed or interactive material that you’re looking at is an exact replication of approved and current material, then it’s OK.”NBAA Guidance “With il t i iP d t di l h• NBAA Guidance “With many pilots using iPads to display approach plates, airport diagrams and other digital documentation, the FAA released InFO 11011 to clarify when authorization is needed to use the device as a Class 1 EFB. Example 5 Step Process for Self Certification1 Read the manual and/or watch the training videos of the in flight1. Read the manual and/or watch the training videos of the in flight

application(s) you plan on using; read the first three chapters of the iPad User Guide for iOS 5 – enter in your logbook, use Miscellaneous page.

2. Fly in the car – have a friend/spouse drive you around to get a feel for how the application works while moving.

3. Fly in the plane as second in command – get a friend and fly a short VFR trip. Bring along your paper charts, AFD, etc. Log the trip and put in the Remarks that you used the iPadRemarks that you used the iPad.– If you are an IFR rated pilot on the trip back fly the approach (in the

right seat) you usually use into your home airport. Log the return flight put in the Remarks what you did.g p y

4. On you next flight take along paper charts but see if you can fly without them. If you need them make sure they are in a convenient place in the aircraft. Put in the Remarks what you did.– Fly as needed to feel comfortable with the iPad. Take a safety pilot

(or teenager) if you are having problems or see #2.5. First flight with iPad alone note that in the Remarks.

Congratulations – you have self certified!

AOPA & NBAA Guidance

AOPAAOPAQuestion: I realize that having charts, approach plates, and airport diagrams displayed on a tablet PC or iPad for viewing in the cockpit is legal for Part 91 operations. However, I recently ran across a PDF version of my airplane’s POH and would like to store this on my iPad rather than keep the actual book in the airplane. Am I legal with an electronic version of an AFM or POH as well?Answer: The short answer is yes Advisory Circular 91-78 states that as long as the precomposedAnswer: The short answer is yes. Advisory Circular 91-78 states that as long as the precomposedor interactive material that you’re looking at is an exact replication of approved and current material, then it’s OK. Keep in mind that many newer airplanes have specific items—supplements and equipment lists, to name a few—that must be available to flight crewmembers. Be sure that you have all of this information in the electronic version, including your airplane’s specific weight-and-balance information, before removing the paper manuals. Here is the specific guidance from the advisory circular on removal of paper from the cockpit for PartHere is the specific guidance from the advisory circular on removal of paper from the cockpit for Part 91 operations:a.
