On behalf of the City Council and City employees, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Bondurant — a city at the crossroads of growth and opportunity. Bondurant is located along Highway 65 close to Interstate 80 and in close proximity to the large-city amenities of Des Moines, yet distant enough to provide a small-town lifestyle. The City recently experienced another large valuation growth last year, with an 18 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. This upward trend has continued over the last several years and clearly demonstrates Bondurant’s attractiveness to residents and business. As a primary destination, we have convenient access to shopping, dining, entertainment, amusement parks, bike/walking trails and regional airport services. Our City Council priorities focus on improving city services and promoting viable opportunities to meet the needs of a growing community. Those areas include supporting public education, infrastructure improvements, public safety, economic development, diverse residential growth, and bikeways and open spaces. Our great city has so much to offer, from education to recreation, we believe there is something here for everyone and every business. We have a highly experienced Fire Department and EMS service that continues to be one of the best in the area. The City was recently awarded a SAFER grant to add three new full-time firefighters and six new part-time employees. You will also find a state-of-the-art public library; miles of paved trails; fishing and canoeing opportunities; restaurants; financial, dentistry, chiropractic and veterinary services; a grocery store and, in general, a business community that is collaborative and thriving. If you are looking for recreational activities, you are in the right place. Our beautiful parks and recreation facilities provide a remarkable quality of life for residents. In addition to some of the best softball and baseball fields in Iowa, located at Bondurant Regional Sports Complex, we also have some of the best maintained soccer fields in the county, located next to the American Legion, and recently expanded our recreational fields at BRSC to include soccer fields. The City purchased 24 additional acres at BRSC and new soccer fields will open for play in fall of 2020. You’ll find a lake stocked with rainbow trout, picnic shelters and a paved walking path around the Lake Petocka waterfront.

The path is part of a growing trail system made possible through years of careful planning and generous grants. Over the last few years, the City has expanded the biking/walking trails connecting to the Chichaqua Valley Trail with additional trail connections to surrounding communities. A great place along the trail system is the Bondurant Trailhead Depot to rest or start your adventure. The inner city trails continue to expand with support of local non-profits, Bondurant Community Foundation and the Lohse Family Foundation. A southern trail connection from the Bondurant Trailhead was recently added with access to the community Gateway Park — the award-winning Porch Swing and Fireflies display. The city also has parks and playground equipment located within residential neighborhoods, which require green space in all new developments, and is adding more equipment this year. This year we are also working to create beautiful spaces in Eagle Park. The park has recently been cleared and will have butterfly gardens and native grasses planted in it this year, as well as several trees. Ultimately, the park will have a soft walking path around the ponds in it. The ponds in Eagle Park are also great places for fishing! Arts and cultural activities enhance the quality of life for our residents. Our residents take great pride in Bondurant’s uniqueness and offer a broad range of year-round civic and cultural events such as our annual Bondurant Summerfest, Pedal Chichaqua Valley Trail, Bondu Spook-tacular, Bondu Blues and Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival, Battle of the Bands, Celebrate Bondurant, Bondurant Farmers Market and many other events. If you are moving to Bondurant for work, school or simply the great quality of life, please know that our area is a growing community offering an ideal environment in which families and businesses can flourish. The City Council and I are committed to collaborating with city organizations/boards, the school district, private businesses and the citizens of Bondurant to improve the overall quality of life. Together we can help sustain appealing growth, meet the needs of the citizens, and keep Bondurant brimming with opportunity. CURT SULLIVAN, Mayor of Bondurant

The Bondurant Community Library (BCL) is an integral part of the community and provides the residents and surrounding area with a wide variety of popular and educational materials, programs, resources, and services that enrich their day-to-day lives and expand their personal and intellectual development. The library supports life-long learning, early literacy development, cultural and recreational activities, and the technology and information needs of the people it serves. BCL seeks to build knowledge, understanding, appreciation and wisdom in a welcoming environment.

Check out our monthly printed and online calendars for future events such as weekly story times, after-school games, bingo, and movie and craft days. There is a monthly book discussion and other adult programs such as a rain barrel workshop, adult coloring, crafting nights, Geri-Fit, and more. There is an annual summer reading program — this year’s events include magician Rick Brammer, Blank Park Zoo, Absolute Science, Women and Drones, Science Center of Iowa, Dr. Oxygen, Des Moines Astronomical Society, and more. BCL also believes in community outreach and promoting early childhood literacy with story times. We visit pre-schools, daycares, and the Wolf Creek subdivision. We also provide materials to in-home daycare providers upon request. BCL helps to bridge the digital divide with free Wi-Fi, computer access, and even Wi-Fi hotspots for checkout. We provide photocopying, faxing and scanning services, and notary and test proctoring. Stop in and browse books through our online catalog, and don’t forget our downloadable audio, eBooks, and video through our Bridges digital collection for your e-reader, too! We offer many excellent online resources through our website, www.bondurant.lib.ia.us. They include: Hoopla for eBooks;

downloadable audio, comic books, and streaming video; Gale and Credo virtual reference library, Transparent Languages for on-line language learning, Brainfuse with career and job services, veteran resources, and academic assistance; ABC Mouse with 3,500+ interactive books, educational games, and puzzles for in-library use; Tumblebooks with animated talking picture books and read-alongs; and RBdigital for downloadable magazines, audio and eBooks. Our newest service, The Adventure Pass program, allows patrons to check out free passes to local venues like the Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines Botanical Garden, Living History Farms, Brenton Skating Plaza, Ames’ Reiman Gardens, Des Moines Children’s Museum, and the Science Center of Iowa. The Bondurant Community Library’s Board of Trustees has conducted a space needs assessment. It is the preliminary step for the planning of the library’s eventual expansion to meet the needs of the growing community. Exciting highlights of the plan include a larger capacity divided community room, children’s story room, maker space, additional seating areas, expanded parking, and lots more. Stay tuned!

The community of Bondurant is located fewer than 10 miles from the cities of Des Moines, Altoona and Ankeny, and offers small-town living with the close convenience of a major metropolitan area. The rural community of Farrar is located approximately 10 miles northeast of Bondurant and formerly housed Farrar Elementary until it closed in 2001-02. At Bondurant-Farrar, you’ll find friendly neighbors, a great school system, and plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors. Bondurant-Farrar is a high-achieving school district that takes pride in providing top-notch educational resources for our students. We are proud of our tradition of excellence and are working hard to ensure an even better future. The size of the district allows students the individual attention needed to succeed, while providing the advantages of a bigger school. Our district serves more than 2,350 students from preschool through grade 12, and is projected to grow annually for the next several years. The main campus, 55 acres in size, is home to the middle school, two elementary buildings, and the district’s transportation facility. The high school campus, located on the north side of Bondurant, is home to Bluejay Stadium and the community auditorium. Technology is integrated into student learning at all levels. The high school, middle school and Anderson Elementary are 1:1 technology

environments. At Morris Elementary, students have access to Chromebooks and iPads. Additionally, the district strives to incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), as well as computer science in unique and innovative ways. The district takes pride in providing a variety of clubs, activities and athletic opportunities to students. Students throughout the district are active in the arts, and often earn statewide recognition for their efforts in band, speech, choir, and visual art. Our student-athletes are students first, and excel both inside and outside of the classroom. Several clubs, such as our local FFA chapter, which was established in 2018, are available to students. We feel fortunate for the many ways community groups, including booster clubs and parent-teacher organizations, provide year-round support for our students and staff. In addition, the Bondurant-Farrar Education Foundation hosts the annual Party of Bluejays event which celebrates the successes of the district while raising funds. We consider ourselves lucky to have such generous and supportive partners in education.
