LaunchWhat is a short way of describing what biological magnification is?

Build-up of chemicals that increases the higher you move in a food chain

What organisms have the most biological magnification in an ecosystem? Which ones have the least?

The organisms that have the most are higher trophic levels such as secondary and tertiary consumers. The organisms that have the least are lower ones such as

producers and primary consumers

Invasive (non-native) Species

• Species that do not naturally exist in an ecosystem

• Begin to compete with the species that are already there.

• Usually brought by humans

• Usually this disrupts the habitat and takes away resources from the original species

Think-Pair-Share

• Is bringing in an invasive species good for an ecosystem? Why or why not.

Invasive (non-native) Species

• Usually this disrupts the habitat and takes away resources from the original species

• Invasive species rarely have predators in their new ecosystems– This can lead to exponential growth

An example of an invasive species

• Cane toads are poisonous frogs that were introduced to Australia and have taken over the country

Quick Question!• In the 1990s, Maryland faced an invasion of snakehead

fish that was not native to the habitat. The snakehead fish has no known predators and eats a lot of food. What is the most likely thing that will happen:– A. they will die out because they don’t live there normally– B. native fish populations will decline because they have to

compete with the snakehead– C. The snakehead will try to find a way to return to their

normal habitat– D. native fish population will increase because of biodiversity

Number into groups of 7

Your poster must have the following:

• The name of your organism

• Where the organism is native to

• Where the organism was introduced to

• Other species the organism competes with

• What was the result of introducing this species into the ecosystem?
