Major

The Problem

???

• Roughly 50% of employers surveyed stated that extracurricular participation is “very important” or “important”

• When asked to rate the ability of students and/or recent graduates to describe the competencies and skills they developed outside the classroom, 61% selected satisfactory or needs improvement, with only 4% rating their ability as excellent.

• Employers selected a range of skills they look for and the top skills they identified were: communication, professionalism, & teamwork.

What employers are saying

If employers look for competencies and skills, but do not think that students are adequately articulating those skills, AND

If employers do not necessarily look at extracurricular engagement when hiring, THEN

Employers often do not view extracurricular opportunities as a means to develop competencies/skills.
