Introduction to Plants

Learning Outcomes….

• Understand the importance of plants on our planet.

• Understand the high level classification of plants.

Plant Kingdom

• The kingdom Plantae consists of four major plant groups on land:

– bryophytes (mosses),

– pteridophytes (ferns)

– gymnosperms (cone-bearing plants)

– angiosperms (flowering plants).

• Plants may be categorized as vascular or nonvascular.

• A vascular plant has tissues for transporting water or sap. Nonvascular plants do not.

How do we classify plant?

Vascular Plants

• Vascular plants, also known as Tracheophyta, form a large group of plants with tissues for conducting water, minerals and food throughout the plant.

VaVascular Plants – Seeds v Spores

Test your knowledge• Identify the four major plant groups in Kingdom Plantae.

• Explain the difference between a vascular an non-vascular plant.

• What is the function of the plant tissue - Xylem and Phloem?

• How do seeds and spores differ?

• What were the first plants on the planet.

• Why is the carboniferous period so important.

• Has the Earth undergone climate change in the past – give an example and state its effect.

• What does the term Angiosperm mean?

• Identify the parts of a flowering plant.

• How would you rate the APP iNaturalist?

Angiosperms - Flowering plant

Discovering PlantsiNaturalist is a social network of naturalists, citizen

scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the

globe.

• Download iNaturalist to your phone.

• Take images and identify 10 wild plants (flowering or non flowering in your location)

• Name them (familiar and Latin)

• Create a location map
