Why Would I Want To Take MUET?

One of the requirements for university

Preparing for the course will teach me important skills I will need in university!

MALAYSIAN UNIVERSITY ENGLISH TEST

MUET – 800 800/1 - Listening 800/2 - Speaking 800/3 - Reading 800/4 - Writing

MUET 800/1 – LISTENING

Duration : 30 minutes

- Candidates are required to listen to 5

recorded texts twice

- answer 20 Questions (3 parts)

MUET FORMAT

- The questions come in the form of

- - information transfer

- short answers questions

- 3-option multiple choice questions

- 4-option multiple choice questions

- Listening texts are taken from different genres

lectures, talk, discussions, interviews, telephone conversations, instructions, advertisements, news, meetings and documentaries

- designed to determine student’s level of proficiency and abilities in listening skills

such as

- Understanding information- Breaking down information - Identifying specific information- Analyzing information

In other words student must be able to form opinions, draw conclusions, make inferences, predict outcomes and generally evaluate information that they listen to

THE PURPOSE OF LISTENING TEST

MUET 800/2 - SPEAKINGDuration : 30 minutes

The aim of MUET speaking test is to assess the candidates’ ability to make individual presentations and to take part in group discussions

on a wide range of academic & current issues.

MUET SPEAKING : FORMAT

This paper comprises of 2 tasks :

Task A - Individual presentationTask B - Group interaction Task A - 2 minutes to prepare points 2 minutes to present

Task B - 2 minutes to prepare points 10 minutes to carry out the discussion

MUET READING : FORMAT

MUET 800/3 READINGDuration : 90 minutes

The purpose of Reading test is to test your understanding of the implications, meanings, and structures presented in the passages

The component consists of 45 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 90 minutes.

Questions may be drawn from journals, newspapers, magazines, websites, academic texts, extract from novels or short stories.

Question 1 – 7 – Interpreting non-linear text & linear text - bar charts, map, pie charts, tables, flow charts, line graphs, etc

Questions 8 – 45 – Reading comprehension- 5 passages

Types of Reading Text

MUET 800 / 4 WRITINGDuration : 90 minutes

The purpose of writing paper is to assess students’ ability to write various types of text

2 writing tasksQuestion 1 - 40 minutesQuestion 2 - 50 minutes

MUET WRITING : FORMAT

Question 1 - Interpreting information based on set of non-linear sources – 150 - 200 words

This task requires you to understand and describe graphic information or data clearly and accurately.

TYPES OF WRITING

Question 2 – Extended Writing - Not less than 350 words

You are given an opinion, a problem or issue which you must discuss.

Question 2 – Extended Writing

You are asked to - present a solution to a problem, - present and justify an opinion, - compare & contrast evidence or opinions, or - evaluate & challenge an argument or idea.
