Introduction to Adding Files

Blackboard Learn 9.1

Kirsten Thompson | University of Leeds

In this tutorial we are going to explore adding files.

Make sure Edit Mode is ON.

Enter a Content Area e.g. Learning Resources

All content can be added from the Content Area Action Bar.

Hover your mouse over Add Content and select Item.

Name the Item e.g. Lecture 1 slides. You may also like to use the textbox to add a description or instruction.

To access all textbox editor features, select the chevron-shaped icon to expand it.

You can expand the textbox editor by dragging the bottom right-hand corner.

Next upload a PDF by using the Browse My Computer option.

You can attach multiple files e.g. a PDF copy and an alternative .pptx copy.

By default, the item will be available and visible to your students immediately.

Remember to select Yes to Track Number of Views if you wish to make use of Reports. Historic reporting data is retained for a maximum of 30 days at the University.

Date and time restrictions can also be set for content. More advanced Adaptive Release rules can also be set once the item has been added.

Once all options have been chosen, select Submit to add your content.

The Lecture 1 slides are now available

As well as the Add Item tool you can upload files using the Add File tool. For images, use Add Image.

Add File is for quick uploading where a description is not needed to support the file.

The Add Image tool provides the option to add ALT (Alternative) text and a long description, which benefits those using screen readers.

Using the Add Image tool displays the image (rather than a link to the image), adding interest.

Ensure you have copyright permission for all images you upload to the VLE.
