Section One: Introducing the Coating
1- These coatings on steel surfaces are called Zinc Flake due to their flake structure.
The flake structure is one of the main factors which causes the coating to be resistant to
corrosion, so in the evaluation of the corrosion test of these coatings, the resistance of at
least 500 hours of salt spray and higher (ASTM b117) without revealing of red rust is
shown.
2-Performance maintained at elevated temperatures (up to 300°C)
3-Pre-treatment processes using alkaline/solvent cleaner followed by mechanical
cleaning do not generate hydrogen, thus eliminating all risk of internal hydrogen
embrittlement (IHE).

4-Because of the low temperatures of curing process (the curing temperatures can be up
to 320 °C) there is no tempering and reducing mechanical properties such as the usual
coatings like HDG.
5-These coatings have very low thickness (6-15 micron) and high performance of
corrosion protection. As it is known, coating thickness has a significant influence on
gauge ability, therefore thread tolerance and clearance in the thread shall be taken into
account.
6-Due to the absence of acid washing in the cleaning process, there is no risk of
industrial waste or environmental hazard.
7-Zinc flake coating systems provide lubricated solutions to achieve a specific clamp
force and a consistent torque/clamp force relationship for fasteners.

8-The adhesion of these coatings to the surface is both a physical and chemical bonding.
Therefore, under the influence of heat (curing), a bonding amongst flakes and also
between flakes and substrate is generated, thus forming an inorganic surface coating
sufficiently so there is excellent adhesion resistance. (ASTM B571 – Equal 5B)
9-These coatings, unlike common coatings, have a very high paintability due to their
flake surface structure. (ASTM 3359D)

10-These coatings are capable of self-healing due to their structure, in confront of
scratches or superficial damage, and this factor has a significant impact on their protective
performance.
11-There is cathodic protection due to the presence of zinc element in the coating
structure.
12-Low cost of coating in comparison to usual coatings such as HDG.

13-These coatings are water-based, without any harmful chemical solvents such as
chromium. Thank to this unique feature of these coatings, there is no risk of industrial
waste or environmental hazard.
Therefore, in Europe, this coating is known as an environmentally friendly coating for
contribution to reduce impacts on environment, health and security of people and received
the Green Industry Award from Responsible Care in 2010.
