Internet safety is no longer about the InternetIt’s about apps

It’s about platforms

It’s about devices

It’s about

connection...

Life moves pretty fast...We are living in a period of time where technology is advancing at an astounding rate,

creating things we’re constantly amazed by...

Our children are living in a period of time with access to the worst technology they’ll

ever use.

How do we not turn into our parents?

How do we balance our fears and their wanderlust?

How do we keep children safe?

How do we keep pace?

Conversations are the best firewall● use the internet with your child

○ let them guide you

○ see the internet as they see it

○ talk about the things they come across

○ discuss what things mean

a @mr_casal production of a @HeathcoteTech presentation

Conversations are the best firewall● encourage exploration

● encourage openness

○ if they have question or concerns it is ok to go to…?

■ mom/dad/aunt/uncle/etc

● internet use in public spaces at home

○ schedule for moving to private use

■ guidelines for getting there/staying there

Restricting access shouldn’t be a first step● we want what we can’t have

● technology is limited by the ingenuity of children

○ see LA’s iPad program

Limit your wifi● Use your wireless router to control access

● Apple’s Airport allows time restrictions

● Linksys (popular wifi router brand)

● Google “restrict MAC address” and the name of your router to find model/brand-

specific instructions

The dynamic has changed...

The internet is irrelevant...

a @mr_casal production of a @HeathcoteTech presentation

It’s about apps...Rover - iOS browser designed for children

Sandbox - a browser that lets you create a “whitelist” of approved sites

Wixie - online and iOS app for writing and drawing (used in Scarsdale)

Kodable - online and iOS app for coding (used in Scarsdale)

Tynker - online and iOS app for coding (used in Scarsdale)

Paper53 - free writing/drawing app

Adobe Voice - make flip books with pictures, text and music

Apps are the “walled garden”Let children use and create with technology offline, outside of a browser

Experiment with apps

● AppsGoneFree - free app, provides daily digest of free apps

● AppShopper - iPhone app that lets you search & create wish-lists of apps for

notifications of price changes

● Graphite.org - educator-sourced reviews of student appropriate apps, games, and

sites along with lesson and project ideas

Try free versions of paid apps before you spend money

● ex: Rover and Tellagami both have multiple versions

Technology

a @mr_casal production of a @HeathcoteTech presentation

If ideas and concepts such as collaboration, creation (not just consumption), and

coding are important for all students, so is knowing how to safely interact with

technology, even when there isn’t a technical safety net. Trust, communication, and

openness go a long way to ensure a child responds appropriately when faced with the

darker side of technology. Often, the safest you can be is when you know you can turn

to a more experienced person (in this case a parent) and ask for help, guidance, and

advice...
