INTERNET RADIO (aka web radio, net radio & streaming radio)

is an audio broadcasting service transmitted via the Internet rather than

over the public airwaves.

(Wikipedia)

What is Internet Radio?

That’s why broadcasting over the Internet

is often referred to as “WEBCASTING”

since it’s not transmitted “broadly” over the open airwaves

but over the World Wide Web instead.

Internet Radio

As Wikipedia explains it, “Internet Radio involves a STREAMING MEDIUM that presents listeners with a continuous "stream" of audio over which they have no control, much like traditional broadcast media.

Internet Radio vs. Podcasts

In this respect, Internet Radio is distinct from “on-demand”file serving or “podcasting” (which involvesDOWNLOADING the audio file rather thansimply receiving a “streaming audio source”).

Internet Radio vs. Podcasts

PodcastingThis is a subtle but important distinction.

A Podcast is a recorded audio file which you download directly into your computer and then

play as often as you want.

It only plays once you’ve download the whole file.

But you can edit it any way you want.

Internet Radio

An Internet Radio Broadcast takes a live (or recorded) audio source and “encodes” it into a “digital stream” that starts playing the minute you access it on the Internet.

You type in an Internet Address, a small “player” pops up on your screen and immediately starts playing the audio “stream” (or “webcast”)…

just like a regular radio!

Internet Radio

And unless you record each show yourself, no part of the webcast remains on your

computer after it runs.

It simply “plays” when you locate the right “stream”

by typing in a web address (instead of turning the radio dial).
