NAME OF PROJECTImproving the Care of Sexual Violence Survivors at PGH, Nakuru, ITP 5

DIRECT OUTCOME OF PROJECT• Establishment of a post rape care centre at the hospital casualty department which provides comprehensive post rape care

• Improvement of documentation on sexual violence cases

• Training of staff on GBVSPIN-OFF EFFECTS• Community mobilization and networking with other stakeholders in the region to form the South Rift GBV Network

• Attracted further support and currently have established an expanded and fully fledged GBV Recovery Centre at the hospital which was inaugurated on Sept 2011

• Establishement of the GBVRC at the Gynaecology ward, Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi after direct intervention by our ITP 5 member

NEXT STEPS• Create awerness to the community and other health workers

• Roll out the GBV centers to other hospitals

• Incorporate into the pre-service and in-service training curriculum for all health workers

DIRECT OUTCOME OF PROJECT• The training provided good obstetrician - midwife relationship thus improving teamwork at place of work and service provision

• The change project led to reduced patient turn-around time

• In coorperation of adequate analgesia by cervical block during uterine evacuation/MVA

• In cooperation of FP methods into post abortal care and counseling

• Change of attitude among healthcare providers towards PAC services

• Development and adoption of standard operating procedure (SOP) guideline in post abortal care

SPIN-OFF EFFECTS • In cooperation of FP and provider initiated counseling and testing within PAC services

• Improvement of pain management during uterine evacuation by use of para-cervical block

• Reduction of turn-around time through comprehensive pack services offered within the same unit (acute gynae ward)

• Change of attitude among health care workers of PAC following senitration seminars conducted by the ITP7group in SRHR who are now friendly to the PAC clients

• Improved knowledge and skills among the care providers in PAC/SRHR through training initiated by the change project team which created a more friendly atmosphere hence increased utilization

• Direct accessibility to the SRHR services through integration of PAC, HIV testing and FP services

NEXT STEPS• Scaling up from the facility to peripheral facilities

• In coorperation of cervical block training into pre-service curriculum for doctors and midwives

• Training of more doctors and midwives in all PAC components
