The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization, with 151 member states, committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and

society.

There are seven program areas active in IOM Tanzania:

• Mixed Migration • Counter Trafficking • Migration Health • Capacity Building for Border Management • Migration and Development • Movement, Emergency and Post-crisis Migration Management• Assisted Voluntary Returns

Health Programming: PHAMESA

The Partnership on Health and Mobility in East and Southern Africa (PHAMESA) aims to improve the management of migration health and reduce migrants’ vulnerability to ill health by responding to their health needs throughout all phases of the migration process.

• Participates in the ONEUN HIV Prevention Working Group

Migrants Current Projects Accessto Health Services at Transport

Corridors and One Stop Border Posts (OSBP)

• Regional Consultation on Health Vulnerabilities on Transport Corridors with a focus on One Stop Border posts.

• High level dialogue on regional integration and the increase in population traffic on transport corridors and border posts.

• Presented health assessment at three OSBPs in Tanzania. Highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to address health vulnerabilities at OSBPs.

• Called for regional coordination and strategies for HIV prevention on national transport corridors.

Health Vulnerabilities in the Extractive Industries

 

• Upcoming national Consultation on TB and Mining in the Extractive Industries

• Proposed research on HIV Vulnerabilities in the Extractive Industries.

Regional Studies

• Health Vulnerabilities in Mixed Migration Flows from the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa to South Africa.

• Health Vulnerabilities of Mobile Populations and Affected Communities in selected sea ports in southern Africa

Integration of Health in Capacity Building Activities

African Capacity Building Centre (ACBC)

IOM’s designated resource to assist African governments in building their capacities in migration management, the ACBC works closely with IOM country missions to deliver: assessments, training programmes, technical assistance, research, project review and development.

• Border and migration management assessments;

• Integrated Border Management;• Immigration training curriculum

development;• One-Stop Border Posts;• Counter-trafficking and smuggling of

migrants• Mixed migration flows;• Migration policy; and• Migration data and statistics.

Migration Health Capacity Building of Immigration Officials

IOM has delivered the Migration Health Training to over 200 Immigration Officials and other frontline border personnel.

Training Covered the following topics:

• Migration and the Right to Health • Health Vulnerabilities and Migration • Health: Border Policies and Procedures • Signs and Symptoms of Communicable Diseases• Healthy Practices and Self-Protection
