IDLO is an international

intergovernmental body which

seeks to strengthen the rule of law

and Good Governance in developing

countries by strengthening judicial

and local institutions to promote a

viable legal framework for

commerce, trade and investment.

The mission of the

Sri Lanka Alumni Association is to

strengthen the rule of law and

Good Governance in Sri Lanka. .

Intellectual Property

for Legal Practitioners

An interactive Workshop to educate Legal Practitioners of practical and

procedural issues relating to Intellectual Property

Trademarks, copyrights, Industrial designs,

Geographical Indications and Patents are

Intellectual Property (IP), the ownership

rights of which are protected under the

Intellectual Property Act No. 36 of 2003.

Developed countries (i.e. USA, EU, Japan,

etc) are considered to be “knowledge based

economies” as the revenue derived from IP

has contributed significantly to their

economic growth. For example, 2/3rds of the

value of large businesses in the USA is traced

to such intangible assets. Since Sri Lanka is

now focused towards attracting Foreign

Direct Investment to give an impetus to our

economy, this is an important area for our

Legal Practitioners to have an in-depth

knowledge, especially in practical and

procedural issues of Intellectual Property

Rights.
