It is estimated that the actual price of inventory for MRO requirements represents only 40 to 50 percent of the total landed cost. In many processing and manufacturing businesses, the MRO inventory is excessive and out of control. Storeroom personnel —and quite frequently purchasing and inventory managers—are not adequately trained in the principles of inventory management. They do not understand how all the components of the MRO total supply chain interrelate.
Vendor Management
A good vendor partner will understand your plant needs and provide continuous suggestions for new products that will improve your operation and successfully control costs. Vendors should also help improve your profitability with inventory management, process improvements and engi-neering assistance. Eliminating redundancy between the vendor and the plant will benefit both parties.
Procurement Cost Management
The procurement process includes purchasing MRO items, negotiating with vendors, managing spot buys and other non-planned or emergency activities. Developing strong vendor partnerships through shared business objectives will substan-tially reduce procurement cost.
Technology Management
Process automation is essential to improving the effi-ciency of the total supply chain—and increasing produc-tivity. Electronic communication creates opportunities for automatic replenishment, summary billing, automated reconciliation of payables and electronic funds trans-fer to the vendor. Using barcodes on work orders, plant equipment, inventory items, issues, receiving and cycle counting can also reduce errors and yield more accurate and timely information.
Maintenance Technology Assistance
Maintenance emergencies cause unexpected downtime and increase production costs. A Computerized Maintenance Management Software program (CMMS) offers better management of the total MRO asset base by focusing on the prevention of emergency downtime.
Fully integrating CMMS with the inventory management system will reduce costs. It will also allow for bar coding of equipment, work orders and inventory items. Maintenance planning and electronic communication with vendors is an important feature of advanced maintenance software.
