A CPU (centralprocessing unit) is thebrain of the computer
It fetches program
instructions from RAM,interprets and processesit and then sends backthe computed results so
that the relevantcomponents can carryout the instructions

To avoid possible damage brought bytemperature, CPUs, and other componentsthat release heat in general, are highlyrequired to have a cooling system.
The CPU is cooled down through either aheatsink and fan assembly (HSF) or throughliquid cooling. In this lesson we will use the
heatsink and fan assembly to cool down ourCPU.

Today we will beinstalling anLGA1150 type ofIntel CPU, but this
method can be usedto other types Materials needed:
◦ CPU◦
Motherboard◦ Heatsink and Fan
Assembly◦ Thermal Paste

2. The load plate willautomatically lift upas the load lever is
pushed to the fullyopen position.NOTE: Do not touchthe socket contacts
or the bottom ofthe CPU.

3. Align the notcheswith the socketalignment keys.Lower the CPUstraight down, without tilting orsliding the CPU in thesocket. Inspect the
CPU to check if it isproperly seated in thesocket.

5. When you pressdown the load leverthe PnP cap willautomatically popup from the CPUsocket. Do notdiscard the PnPcap. Always replace
the PnP cap if theCPU is removedfrom the socket.

There are differentmethods of applying thethermal paste onto theCPU. But all of these
methods are more or lesshave the same effect onthe temperature. Todaywe will be using the mostcommon method, whichis the middle dot method.

Place a fair amountof thermal paste tothe center of the
heat spreader of theCPU.
You can tell that youhave applied enoughif the paste on theCPU is rice-sized.

1. Place the heatsink onthe motherboard withthe fan’s cable facingtowards the fan
connector and thefasteners matchingthe holes on themotherboard. NOTE:Make sure that thenarrow groove ofeach pin is pointingoutward.

2. Push down theheatsink until thefour fasteners getwedged into the holes
on the motherboard.Press the fourfasteners down tofasten the heatsink. As each fastenerlocks into position aclick should be heard.
