Dear Calabro Learning Community,
Thank you to the parents and guardians with children in the 3rd-6th grades who attended
the PARCC Interpretation Parent Session on Wednesday, December 7th. Among other
items discussed, the presentation included a review of the student individual reports from
the 2016 PARCC administration that were mailed to the homes of students in grades 4th-
6th on Friday, November 18th. The tentative 2017 PARCC schedule was also reviewed,
and it can be found on the district website under the curriculum header and district-wide
testing tab.
I will also be hosting a Parent/Guardian Academy Family PARCC Day on Friday,
January 6, 2017. This will begin immediately following our PTO meeting. In a
presentation at 9:30 a.m. in the all-purpose room, I will highlight key features of the
2017 test administration. For parents/guardians with children in the 3rd-6th grades, this
event will also include a visit to your child’s classroom from 9:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
During the lesson, you will be invited to complete a PARCC practice test with your
child. I hope to see you at this important informational event.
Best,
Joseph P. Vespignani, Ed.D.

Science and Coding with Mrs. Farooq and
Ms. Benevenga
Students completed one hour tutorials as an introduction to computer science and to celebrate Com-
puter Science Week. By participating in 'The Hour of Code,' students applied problem solving skills,
logical thinking, and creativity. They learned how to program drawings using JavaScript. They also
mastered how to program droids, and create their own Star Wars game by using JavaScript. Students
created webpages with HTML tags and CSS about self selected topics, and used blocks of code to take a
character to an adventure through the Minecraft world. In addition, students created their own
animated stories using blocks to code.

Science with Mrs. Farooq
Matter, Engineering, Technology & Innovation
Calabro’s scientists refined their knowledge of various topics during
the first few months of the school. Students in the lower grades have
been investigating properties of matter and the forces at work. They
have completed several investigations to master the scientific skills of
observation, communication, and collection and analysis of data.
The upper grade students were exploring engineering, technology, and
innovation in the first few weeks of school. They have conducted sev-
eral learning activities to explore engineering careers, how
technology impacts our lives, and why humans have to keep
innovating with technology. These activities have acquainted them
with the processes and skills that engineers require to be successful in
their careers.
