DESCRIPTION

This presentation was given at the Qualcomm Research Center discussing the nuances of the Google Glass Interaction Layer. Here were a few of the topics covered throughout the evening: How does the Google Glass’ interaction layer work and what constitutes good design when designing interactions for the device. First we will define ‘what an interaction is’ on Google Glass. We will proceed to identify and classify good use cases from bad ones and then address where there is a margin for innovation surrounding those various use cases

INSIDE THE GOOGLE GLASS

INTERACTION LAYER

WHAT IS GOOGLE GLASS?

INFOGRAPHIC BY M. MISSFELDT

the human/computer interaction layer (hcil) is a concept

that was defined by Bill atkinson as a way to isolate and

IDENTIFY behavior(S) WITHIN complex systems. }{

WHAT DEFINES THE INTERACTION LAYER?

Ambient noise/verbal input

visual & Audible feedback

Gestural input from: head movement, eye movement, finger taps/swipes

input from wide-angle camera (motion detection) awareness of wearer

bone conduction to hearer

Auxiliary device control via microusb, GPS, wifi & bluetooth

A natural user interface (NUI) is an emerging concept in Human/Computer

Interaction that refers to a interface that is effectively invisible, or

becomes invisible to its user with successive learned interactions.

The word natural is used because most computer interfaces use artificial

control devices whose operation has to be learned. A NUI relies on a

user being able to carry out relatively natural motions, movements or

gestures that they quickly discover control the computer application

or manipulate the digital content.

natural - organic, unthinking, prompted by instinct user interface - the points at which a user interacts with a system

the more natural the interaction,

the more meaningful the experience.

GLASS ATTEMPTS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF GETTING TECHNOLOGY OUT OF THE WAY SO THAT WE CAN BE FREE FROM DISTRACTION (NOT MORE DISTRACTED)

THIS POOR SOUL LEFT HIS SMARTPHONE AT HOME AND WAS FORCED

TO WATCH AN ENTIRE CONCERT WITH HIS OWN EYES.

GOOD USE CASES

notifications & beeps for meaningless content or reminders

filling your social feed with uninteresting junk from your life

using camera to capture distance scenes, closeups & macro photography

reading literature

constant immersion

POOR USE CASES

accessibility & assistance for the challenged/impaired

urgent notifications

immediate availability of handsfree camera

capturing precious moments with family

documenting ones own performances for self-improvement

occasional immersion
