• enhance the student learning experience?
• provide useful and timely feedback?
• help students to understand and recognise quality?
• lead to improved performance?

What is innovative assessment?
Literally defined, innovative assessment could be any form of assessment which involves the application of a new technique or method.
For us, however innovative assessment has come to mean more than that.
It is a term we use which encompasses a whole range of different techniques and methods, not all of which are new inventions.

Innovation in education does not necessarily require high-tech and complex solutions.
Often innovation is about an attitude of mind or culture. Many of the most successful and forward-thinking projects use existing, easily accessible, and common technologies that are a familiar part of learners’ everyday lives such as social networks, games, and discussion forums.
Variety is the spice of life! Examples
Work on live assignments with local companies in which they immerse themselves in a consultancy experience, producing overview reports of real use to the companies concerned
eg market research for a local organisation
The assessment itself may be done by the tutor, by the students, or even by an outsider, such as an employer.
Innovative assessment also encourages the assessment of learners not just as individuals but also as individuals working in groups, and as groups of individuals.
Example: Combined Assessment exercise – Public Services
A 1-day live exercise which involves› all of the teaching team› Key stakeholders – members of the:
Police – Tactical support group, Local Traffic Sgt
Fire brigade Ambulance RAF
Assessment Tutors are assigned roles – assessment
or coordination Assessment also takes place by
members of the various services, HOS and DHOS
Evidence provided by:› witness statements, › Photos› Radio logs (messages recorded on a
mobile phone)
Other methods used: PowerPoint Presentation Poster presentation involving peer
assessment› Poster may be photographed (mobile phone)
and evidence uploaded› Use alongside a forum on which students
conduct peer assessment (carefully monitored!)
Chat room Web page
Minimise the number of assessment tasks
Eg HND Health and Social Care – Enterprise Project› all units are integrated into 14 tasks› Begins with researching a potential
enterprise› Ends with presenting a proposal for an
enterprise to professional representatives Eg2 Games Technology
Benefits of innovative assessment
By incorporating a range of different methods innovative assessment assesses a broader range of skills
It is a more reliable assessment of student learning because it is not dependent on any one method of assessment.
This process helps maintain student motivation, enabling them to learn more steadily and fluently.
A range of different techniques and methods should stimulate both staff and student interest.
No mileage in this approach, I’m afraid
Let’s say..........
You have been asked to assess this presentation!!!!
(No grades, thank you!) How would you evidence
your grade?
