IMPRESSIONS OF THE COMENIUS MEETING IN GÜSTROW

We are nice surprised of the responsibility and the autonomy of our host sisters, and of all the students and the school in general.

The welcome to the school was great and formal, and the Christmas concert at school was also incredible, something that seems impossibleto organise in our school (the choir was an after school activity).

Some German students also presented us the most important places of the town.

We noticed some differences between our school and John Brinckman Gymnasium. For example they call the teachers Herr (Mr.) or Frau (Mrs.) and their surname.

The man who gives his name to the school, John Brinckman was so magnified. There was a sculpture in the entrance, a bust in a corridor and a picture of him in the auditorium.

The Principal was very important (more than here):

The building was old but beautiful and clean. The corridors were wide and with exhibitions of some work of art students

At the break we could listen to a girl playing the flute in the middle of the stairs.

Classrooms were cosy and had comfortable chairs and carpet floor.

They had smartboards only in the computer room, and blackboards were expansible, a very useful feature.

There were not some restrictions in the classrooms:

Some students drank, ate and saw their mobile phone, but obiously without gettingdistracted.

*we don’t know if it was only during the Comenius lessons, that were special

Students were respectful with other students and with us. They were responsible and they were able to choose more subjects, like French, Russian or Spanish.

Students could go out of the school during break times, because the doors were opened and there wasn’t any fence.

Autonomous classes

Respectful, responsible and motivated students

Functional classrooms

Lessons lasted only 45 minutes, so after 6 lessons and two breaks we could have lunch earlier than in Catalonia (they started school at 8 and finished at 13.15).

All the Comenius students were divided into 3 work groups: Brave New World, Phrasebook and Questionnaires.

We didn’t have much time, but we all worked a lot and students had creative and interesting ideas.

At the end we did a presentation about what we did and learnt.

On Tuesday we went to Rostock, where apart from visiting the Christmas market we went to the Darwineum, a new place of thezoo of Rostock about the evolution that was good because it was relatedwith Brave New World.

Obviously we noticed other cultural differences in Germany, but the most shocking thing was the weather.

It was difficult to adapt to the meteorological conditions. At half past four it was completely dark and we didn’t see the sun in all the trip. We only saw a bit of light among the fog sometimes.

Meals were also a bit strange: they were not structured by a first and a second courses and the dessert, but in some meals we only ate a piece of pizza, a serving of spaghetti... And they usually drink sparkling water!

Welcome, Willkommen, Benvenuto, Välkommen… and “Bienvenido”
