While other manufacturing industries have moved from batch to continuous processing, the pharma/biopharma industry has been slow to move away from the batch mode. Yet a number of companies are now considering and implementing continuous processing in step-wise fashion to realize the gains in efficiency and consistency that such an approach offers. Several new technologies enabling continuous bioprocessing will be presented, including SMB chromatography and single-pass tangential-flow filtration. Rutgers Advanced Materials Initiative will present its pilot process for continuous production of drug product from drug substance.
