We Are Now A National
Research School
Huntington School is proud
to become one of five
National Research Schools.
Huntington School, York,
has been designated as
the Research School for
the Yorkshire and Humber
region. Five schools
across England will
become focal points of
education research in their
region after winning part of
£2.5m of funding from the
Education Endowment Foundation (EEF)
and the York-based Institute for Effective
Education (IEE). (Continued on P2)
Alex Quigley, Director of Research School &
Jane Elsworth, Assistant Director
From the Headteacher
Dear Parents
Welcome back to a new school year—it is hard to believe the first half term is over already.
Examination Results 2016
I was very pleased with our summer examination results! Here are the DfE’s provisional headlines:
A*-C GCSE in English & Mathematics: 69%;
Attainment 8: 56.2;
Progress 8: +0.3;
English Baccalaureate: 41%.
Congratulations to our Sixth Form students on their fantastic results:
57% A-B rate; 22% A*-A rate. Two students met their Oxbridge offers; three students met their
university offers for Medicine.
Warmest congratulations to the students, staff and you, the parents!
Sixth Form Open Evening
This year’s Sixth Form Open Evening is taking place on Tuesday 8 November
I would like to extend an open invitation to all Year 11 students to attend with their parents.
The new Research Schools will build networks between large numbers of schools in their
region and support them to make better use of evidence to inform their teaching and
learning. There is a growing body of evidence-based resources and tools available to help
inform school leaders and teachers on improving pupil results and spending their budgets
more effectively, but it can be difficult to get research into schools in ways that really make
a difference in the classroom.
Huntington Research School is recognised as a leader in bridging between education
research and everyday classroom practice. They’ll use their expertise to support up to 1000
schools by:
Encouraging schools in their network to make use of evidence-based programmes
and practices through regular communication and events.
Providing training and professional development for senior leaders and teachers on
how to improve classroom practice based on the best available evidence.
Supporting schools to develop innovative ways of improving teaching and learning
and providing them with the expertise to evaluate their impact.

6th Form Physicists Visit University of York
On Wednesday 19th October, 15 A-level students visited the Department of Physics at
the University of York to experience what life might be like as Physics student at
University. The students enjoyed a tour of the University’s Astrocampus which houses two
radio-telescopes and three powerful reflector telescopes. Students also had the
opportunity to hold a meteorite that crash-landed on Earth about a billion years ago.
Students then undertook a variety of activities. Special mentions must go to Ben
Schofield and Mel Paylor (both Year 12) who managed to measure the speed of light
to within 5% of the true value (300 million m/s), and also to Idris Lloyd (Year 12) who
managed to get a small magnet to levitate above a superconductor which he had
cooled to below –200°C using liquid nitrogen. The students then experienced a lecture
on the weird properties of quantum physics, where physical systems (e.g. a ‘bit’ of
information) can be in two states (e.g. ‘0’ and ‘1’) at the same time, and how this could
be used in the future to create totally secure electronic communications. This would
represent a huge leap forward in encryption methods used for websites, email, wi-fi
and contactless payments. The day was enjoyed by all and everyone certainly
learned a lot about how physics is currently pushing the boundaries of our
understanding of the Universe.

Year 6 and Year 8 Aspirations Fair
Title...
Huntington School hosted its annual Aspirations Fair on
Wednesday 19th October, showcasing more than 27
businesses, York College, York County Council and York
Apprenticeship Hub. The aim of the event was to promote
information about careers available, opportunities available
and provide information about further education.
The day was a resounding success with more than 450 students
passing through the fair throughout the day. The morning started
as hundreds of students from five local primary schools including
Yearsley Grove, Huntington Primary, Stockton on the Forest and
Robert Wilkinson packed the hall to try a range of activities
relevant to different industry sectors.
“This is fantastic. The best ever! There are over a hundred children
in here and you would not know it. Each one is engaged in an
activity – there is so much to do”, said a Year 6 teacher.
Year 6 and Year 8 Aspirations Fair
The fair was not finished yet!
This year for the first time Year 8s had the opportunity and
privilege of being able to learn more about their future
choices and the opportunities available to them.
Local businesses offering the advice included Portakabin,
Nestle, Amey, National Rail, Derwent Training, Vets 4 Pets,
York City Football Club, Asda, Toni & Guy, Yorkshire Crick-
et Board, JTL Training, Engineering Board, and The Hilton.
But there were also representatives from the RAF, York
Hospital, Police and Army to name but a few.
Further educational providers such as York College, York
St John University and The York Apprenticeship hub were
also represented. There was an air of purposefulness
throughout the afternoon and several business
representatives commented on the quality of questions
that they had been asked by our students.
A big ‘Thank you’ to the Year 7 helpers who impressed
everyone with their willingness to help and their
thoughtfulness.
