Principal’s Report
Week 11
Suddenly it is week 11 and students are ready for their first term break. As is usual the term has been busy with hardly a week passing without some sort of activity involving groups of students. In the face of falling numbers we have managed some creditable sporting achievements and as I have said before the highlight of these occasions was the amazing team effort in each competition. Yesterday in Adelaide was another example of the team spirit our athletes have shown all year. Students have received their first report for the year and it is a great opportunity for both the students and their families to reflect on subject achievement, while looking at results in the context of teacher comments. It is important for students to reflect by asking themselves how satisfied they are with their report. An honest response here should lead them to thinking about any barriers to higher achievement they may be facing. One strategy Home Group teachers will use is to give students a checklist of actions they can apply to improve their learning. There are things on the list as simple as completing homework, using non-contact lessons effectively, asking the teacher for help, working at personal organisation and being sufficiently rested and nourished. Often students who score below a C grade do so because they fail to complete or turn in assessed work. The real reason is often poor time management, rather than an inability to cope with the work. Some simple tips to improve a student’s time management are things like mapping out each week so that one knows what is coming up, using a calendar or high school planner app, breaking each assignment into its parts, then tackling each one at time, and preparing for the next day’s school the night before to encourage worry free sleep. One really useful strategy is timing one’s self. When a student gets a sense for how long things REALLY take versus how long they THINK they take, their productivity will soar. Once students begin applying time management techniques the benefits will be reflected in their grades. I attended the SESSA Industry Training Awards last night in Mt Gambier where Josh Will received the Rising Star Award. It was a proud moment for him and his family and a just reward for hard work and dedication to his VET studies. Congratulations from all our school community Josh. It was also heartening to read all the student’s subject reports and to see the effort and strong results many are showing. Enjoy a safe break and recharge ready for the second term. Markus Trnovsky
I graduated from Bordertown High School in 2012 after studying PE,
English, Biology and IT, whilst also having completed the Research
Project in Year 11.
After leaving school in 2012 I moved to Adelaide and made the transition
from school and country life to university and city life. Having to move
away from family and friends was not an easy task, yet I’m grateful that
I made the decision to do so, as the experiences and friendships created
since have been unforgettable. Making a decision to take a step in the
direction of the unknown may be overwhelming, but from my personal
experience it can also be the most rewarding.
In 2013 I began studying Science, Technology and Human Movement at
Uni SA. After some thought about what I personally enjoy and value, I
used the experience gained at Uni SA as a platform to then pursue a
career in Teaching at Flinders University in 2014. My university experience was fantastic, it
was an opportunity to build character, create great memories, and, most importantly, gain life
experience. University life isn’t all study and no fun, there are many events on and off campus
that gave me opportunities to meet people and to enjoy great times. One thing I can thank for
my enjoyment at University was my country upbringing. Growing up in the country exposes
you to many social events and multiple opportunities to work collaboratively with a variety of
people.
I graduated from m double degree of Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Health Science
in 2017 and recently have been appointed as a P.E teacher in a South Australian school. The
journey to get to my position was not all easy and did take time. Bordertown High School
helped build me up in many ways, not just academically. Having the opportunity to work closely
with peers in class, participate in events such as Sports Day, the Swimming Carnival,
Interschool events and Agriculture activities provided me with learning opportunities that most
certainly benefit me to this day. I appreciate the effort BHS put into me whilst I was at school
and now when I look back on my school days I am grateful that I was part of such a supportive
school community.
The advice that I would give to the current students at BHS is to take risks! Always try new
things; challenging yourself builds character and whether you are successful or not, you can
be sure to learn something. Cherish the good times with your friends, challenge yourself and
take opportunities as they arise.

“Wonder”
A sincere thank you to the Tatiara District Council for coordinating a free screening of the film “Wonder” last
Thursday. It is a heart-warming film with a very strong message which hopefully remains in the memories of
the 130 Year 8-10 students in attendance on the day.

NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests the sorts of skills that are
essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and
numeracy. All Year 9 students will undertake NAPLAN Testing in our school hall in Week 3 of Term 2.
Information has been sent home to parents with more details regarding the tests. It is important to remember
that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. The data that we obtain from the NAPLAN results is one of a
number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress and identify areas for improvement.
We welcome all parents to make contact with the school if you have any questions regarding NAPLAN.
Naomi Excell – Year 9 Coordinator
The steers have been arriving throughout the term and student have started working on them. This year we have the following steers: Limousin – Modras Murray Grey – Buicks Poll Hereford – Bennetts Shorthorn – Withers Simmental – Bakers Cross bred Limo and Murray grey for Mt Gambier show – Campbells We thank them all for their generosity and support of our show team. Jess Pretlove is studying their weight gains, feed costs and marketing for her year 12 external assignment. We also have 6 merino wethers that have arrived for the Adelaide show from the Lock family. They are currently being fed and monitored by Toni Shaw in year 12 who is investigating the cost of running a small lamb feedlot.
Sentral is our new online student management system. A letter was sent home to all
parent/caregivers explaining the system and how to access it. It is important that all parents
signup to enable them to access information about their child, including attendance,
parent/teacher interview bookings and, in the future, reports.

you need another copy of your family access key which is required to access your child’s
information.

On the April 3rd 2018 I attended the National Whip Cracking
titles at the Sydney Easter show. I competed in the junior
section against some tough competition coming from
Queensland, High Country Vic, Melbourne, New South Wales
and Tasmania. I scored nicely in all my events, which are my
ten chosen tricks, freestyle and accuracy, with my tricks
getting me the most points. At the end of the day after a warm
day in the sun watching other competitors they held the
presentations. They announced I was third with a great score
of over 300 points, but not quite good enough to get me to the
top spot. I was thrilled with the achievement at Sydney and
am very excited to face the same competitors in the
Queensland state titles held in Boonah. I would like to thank
the High School for their sponsorship for the trip the Sydney.

Student Achievements
Year 11 PE Surf Camp
The Year 11 PE class had their annual Surf camp during week 10 this term. 17
students and 2 teachers enjoyed the waves and learnt some new skills.
It all started with the trip from Bordertown to Middleton on the bus, an eventful trip
fuelled with great anticipation. After arriving at Middleton caravan park the students
prepared for their first session in the waves, with many having never surfed before.
There were wipeouts and frustration but there were also successes with many
students achieving the thrill of riding a wave. After surfing had finished it was time for
a shower and to get warm, followed by a trip into Victor Harbor for the teachers to do
the food shopping.
Day 2 started at Horseshoe Bay in Port Elliot for some surf safety and board paddling
activities, with the students making friends with a seal while paddling around the bay.
The afternoon sessions were back at Middleton where more surfing was in order, with
more success, with all students standing on their boards and riding a wave.
Day 3 was much the same as students continued to improve their skills in the waves
and having fun. It wasn’t all about fun and games though as the students were actually
being assessed on their ability to surf as one of their PE practicals. In the end all
students achieved good grades and had a great time.
The instructors commented on how positive and enthusiastic the group were as they
strived to improve. Well done to all the students.
