Eyes Contact as a Non Verbal Way of Communication

Eye Contact• The Study Of Eye Contact is called OCULESIS• Eye Contact is an important part of using effective communication

skills.• People are more likely to comply when more eye contact is used.• Eye Contact establish a connection between the person.• Eye contact also tells us that whether the other person is paying

attention or not.• Maintaining eye contact during communication will make your

presentation much more effective.

Types of Eye Contact

A Strong Eye Contact Shows that the individual is Confident

and Frank.

While Looking Down Shows Modesty, Lack of Self Confidence, Guilt etc.

Importance of Eye Contact• When you fail to make eye contact with your listeners, you look less

authoritative, less believable, and less confident.• When you don't look people in the eye, they are less likely to look at

you. And when they stop looking at you, they start thinking about something other than what you're saying, and when that happens, they stop listening.• When you look someone in the eye, he or she is more likely to look at

you, more likely to listen to you, and more likely to buy you and your message.

Importance of Eye Contact• When you look a person in the eye, you communicate confidence and

belief in your point of view. One of the most powerful means of communicating confidence and conviction is sustained, focused eye contact.

• Sustained, focused eye contact makes you feel more confident and act more assertively. It may feel weird at first, but when you practice, it becomes a habit that gives you power

• When your listeners see your eyes scanning their faces, they feel invited to engage with you. They feel encouraged to signal to you how they feel about what you're saying--with nods, frowns, or sceptical raisings of their eyebrows.

• As a result, your listeners are transformed from passive receivers to active participants. Your monologue takes the form of a dialogue, albeit one in which you speak words while they speak with gestures and facial expressions. Your speech or presentation is suddenly a conversation.

• However, to have a successful dialogue with your audience, you must respond to what your listeners are signalling. So, for instance, when you see scepticism, you might say, "I know it seems hard to believe, but I promise you, the investment makes sense. The data bears it out. "• Finally, when you look someone in the eye for three to five seconds,

you will naturally slow down your speech, which will make you sound more presidential. In fact, you will find that you are able to pause, which is one practice that has helped President Obama become a powerful and effective orator.

3 Rules of Effective Eye Contact

Eye contact with a business associate. This positioning is most appropriate in a business situation. Imagine a line below your business associate's eyes. This will serve as the base of a triangle and the peak will be at their mid-forehead. To maintain a professional contact, keep your eyes in the middle of that triangle when speaking to others.

Eye contact in a personal relationship. If you know the other person on a personal level, invert the triangle so that its peak is now at their mouth. Still, keep your eyes focused in the middle of the triangle, which is now at the bridge of their nose. Also, always be aware that spending too much time looking at the lower half of someone's face may give off inappropriate nonverbal messages

Eye contact with controlled blinking. "We tend to blink more when we are under stress so learn to control your blink rate, If you're trying to send a serious message, you should practice your direct eye contact without blinking, because "limited blinking adds to your message's credibility."
