has been a traditional walk-up Dairyqueen since it opened in 1949,
and besides the traditional
Dairy queen menu items,
it also offers customer
favorites such as
Chipper andwiches,

or Gen Eidem, a frequent theater-goer inFargo-Moorhead, live dramatic productionsfeed the soul, she says. Theater contributes
to the quality of our life by energizing us andby providing a means for us to come together for acommon reason. There is something totally magicalabout theater, and believe me, we dont have to fly offto NYC to find good productions. We have them righthere in our area.
ar aroEidem isnt alone in her appreciation for local
theater. The dramatic arts have long been animportant part of the Fargo-Moorhead community.
We have always had a strong history of supporting
the performing arts, and in the recent past, that hasreally grown, says Dayna Del Val, executive directorof The Arts Partnership. The community has been
very supportive of the work being done by the varioustheatrical companies with both financial assistanceand with attendance. This is a community that seemsto really value live performance.
And theaters in Fargo-Moorhead offer liveperformances in a number of styles and genresincluding musical theater, classic American theater, contemporary theater and true community theater,Del Val says. The community also offers dramaticprogramming for every age group, from the very
youngest children all the way up to senior adults. We now have multiple summer programs

specifically geared for elementary, junior and seniorhigh school students, Del Val says. We have alsoseen a surge in the number and variety of types ofadult theatrical experiences being offered throughoutthe community.
t p bgWhile theater patrons broaden their horizons
by enjoying live theater, the performers and
behind-the-scenes workers gain additional value. One of my favorite things that I take away from
my involvement in the theater is meeting new people, says Linda Hinrichs, who has performed in plays withseveral local companies. I consider it a very specialtreat when I have the opportunity to perform withothers that I have been on stage with before. Iappreciate the experience of working with differentdirectors and learning from them, as well as thepeople I am acting with.
Over the past several years, Fargo-Moorhead has
become a haven for performers, theater buffsand theater novices who want to experiencesomething new and exciting. And the dramaticarts have made Fargo-Moorhead a richer, moreinteresting place to live.
On any given weekend throughout the year, there is at least one live theatrical performance goingon somewhere, and often, there is more than one,Del Val says.
Our programming has expanded and increasedas our quality of life has. Its been a very symbioticrelationship, as the demand for both more theatricalprogramming and quality of life issues have grownup together. Today, there is cutting-edge theater beingproduced [here] as well as contemporary and classicalmusicals. The best of American theater and PulitzerPrize-winning plays are being done. Comedies, dramas, farces, musicals and more are showcasingthe best of the theatrical experience to our audiencesand our actors.

Fargo-Moorhead foodies have a lot to be proudabout when it comes to the local restaurantscene. Innovative foreign cuisine jostles goodol American standbys, sometimes on the
same menu. This is an area that likes choice, and itsrestaurateurs respond. We have a variety, and the majority of our
restaurants are locally owned so they add a lotof flair and personality unique to Fargo, saysMike Hahn, president and CEO of the DowntownCommunity Partnership. They help our downtowncore stay vibrant, but also add to the overallpersonality of the community.
One of the best-known players on Fargos restaurantroster is Mezzaluna, which hangs its hat on the useof fresh, local ingredients in a rotating menu.
Were definitely known for our duck, but people
also really like our seafood, which we have flown in,says Sara Watson, who along with husband and chefEric owns and operates Mezzaluna. Fargo loves itsfood, and in the eight years weve been here we have
found it to be a really special place.

Gone are the days
where students wouldsit in algebra classwondering how they
will ever use what they are learningin the real world.
Today, more and more studentsare being taught through STEM(science, technology, engineeringand math) education, whichfocuses on engaging students inprojects and using the engineeringdesign process.
Greater Fargo-Moorheadteachers now have the chance tolearn real world applications for
principles they teach in their
classes through a summerinternship at some of the areaslargest employers.
tr idurThe Greater Fargo-Moorhead
Economic DevelopmentCorporation and North DakotaState University launched theTeachers in Industry program in2011 to spark more innovation inteaching in the areas of science,
technology, engineering and mathin hopes more students will enterthe workforce in related fields.
The program grew to include
four employers Sanford Health,Bobcat, Microsoft and John DeereElectronic Solutions in 2012; itis expected to grow by at least twocompanies in 2013.
Theres a real world app thatseventh-grade teacher AdamGehlhar learned through hissummer internship at North andSouth Dakotas largest employer,Sanford Health, that the workhis school is doing to teach kids
how to think, not what to think,is critical to their success in the21st century.

The first few weeks of Gehlharsclasses at the West Fargo STEM
Center in fall 2012 focused on someof the hands-on demonstrations oflean engineering that he learnedduring his month-long internshipat Sanford Health.
The students will learn and applythese concepts to improve processesand standardize our workflows forthe year, he says. We will use leanengineering and its ideas to supportbuilding a growth mindset withinour students.
Students also will learn to
apply math concepts by usingExcel to tabulate and analyze dataas Gehlhar learned in the Officeof Continuous Improvement atSanford Health.
r d omEDC Communications
Coordinator Lisa Gulland-Nelsongot the idea for the internshipprogram after speaking to theprincipal of the West Fargo STEM
Center. She learned teachers aretrained to educate, but they rarelyget exposed to the working world.
From there, she went to work onsecuring large employers to partner
with and allow area teachers towork in companies that have someof the most in-demand jobs.
Companies say they participatedin the internship program as a wayto serve the community and assistin educating the future workforce.
We truly benefited from havingan engaged and eager teacher asa part of our team this summer. He brought forth lots of greatquestions, input and observations, says Nicole Schell, human resources
advisor for Sanford Health. At John Deere Electronic
Solutions, the teacher intern wasexposed to the different phases ofthe design and development of newprojects to the manufacturing andtesting of prototypes.
These activities correlated veryclosely to what the teacher washoping to get from the experienceas we wanted to make sure thatthey were very engaged throughout
the process, says Sam Wheeldon, technical manager of electronicdesign at John Deere.
