ILLEGAL DRUGSDiscussion

DRUG CATEGORIES

• According to the International Drug Evaluation and Classification Program, there are 7 drug categories.

• The 7 drug categories:• Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants (GHB)• CNS Stimulants (Cocaine, Methamphetamine)• Hallucinogens (LSD, MDMA)• Dissociative Anesthetics (PCP)• Narcotics (Heroin)• Inhalants (various anesthetic gases)• Cannabis (Marijuana, THC)

CNS DEPRESSANTS

• GHB• This drug is available as an odorless, colorless drug that may be combined

with alcohol and given to unsuspecting victims prior to sexual assaults.• It may have a soapy or salty taste.• Commonly referred to as a “club drug” or “date rape” drug.• Euphoria, increased sex drive, and tranquility are reported positive effects of

GHB abuse.• The production of GHB usually involves the use of lye or drain cleaner mixed

with GBL, a chemical cousin of GHB and an industrial solvent often used to strip floors.

CNS STIMULANTS

Cocaine

• Cocaine is a white powder derived from the coca leaf.. Cocaine can also be made into small white rocks, called crack.

• After the "high" of the cocaine wears off, you can "crash" and feel tired and sad for days.

* Both can be snorted up the nose or mixed with

water and injected with a needle

Methamphetamine

• Meth is a powder that can be made into “crystal” form. Crystal meth is smoked in a small glass pipe.

• Meth at first causes a rush of good feelings, but then users feel edgy, overly excited, angry, or afraid

HALLUCINOGENS

• LSD• Also known as “Acid”• LSD is one of the most potent mood-changing chemicals. It was discovered in

1938 and is manufactured a fungus that grows on rye and other grains.• LSD is sold in tablets, capsules, and, occasionally, liquid form; thus, it is

usually taken orally. LSD is often added to absorbent paper, which is then divided into decorated pieces, each equivalent to one dose. The experiences, often referred to as “trips,” are long; typically, they end after about 12 hours.

• Peyote• Also used as a recreational drug because it can cause hallucinations. It

contains a chemical called mescaline that has effects that are similar to LSD, but less powerful.

HALLUCINOGENS

• MDMA• It is man-made• Also known as “Ecstasy” and "Molly“• MDMA is abused by taking a pill, tablet, or capsule. These pills

can be different colors, and sometimes have cartoon-like images on them. Some people take more than one pill at a time, called "bumping.“• A “hit” of MDMA lasts for 3 to 6 hours. • People who use MDMA might feel very alert, or “hyper,” at first.

Some lose a sense of time and experience other changes in perception, such as an enhanced sense of touch.

INHALANTS

• Nitrous Oxide• Also known as “Whippets” • Mostly sold in small cartridges that are intended for use in making whipped

cream or in tanks for dentistry.• These cartridges are “cracked” and the gas is released into a balloon to

inhale.• People who use this drug can experience something like a seizure.

DISSOCIATIVE ANESTHETICS • PCP

• Also known as “Angel Dust”• PCP users often feel detached, distant, and estranged from their surroundings.• Effects:

• Numbness of the extremities • Slurred speech • Loss of coordination • Sense of strength and invulnerability. • Auditory hallucinations• image distortion • Violent hostility• Acute anxiety

• A blank stare, rapid and involuntary eye movements are among the more observable effects.

• Many believe PCP to be one of the most dangerous drugs of abuse.

NARCOTICS

• Heroin• Also known as “H” or “Smack”. Heroin is highly addictive• Heroin (like opium and morphine) is made from the resin of

poppy plants.• Most heroin is injected, creating additional risks for the user,

who faces the danger of AIDS or other infection on top of the pain of addiction.• Heroin is a fine white powder. But more often, it is found to be

rose gray, brown or black in color. The coloring comes from additives which have been used to dilute it, which can include sugar, caffeine or other substances

MARIJUANA

• Discussed through our blog.
