IJplein is taking back control

After years of degradation, the residents of Amsterdam’s IJplein neighboorhood are taking back control of their neighboorhood. IJplein has set the standard for the new modern neighboorhood, where not the municipality, but the people decide. page 7&8

Interviews with the locals

“I’ve been living here for 20 years now. I wouldn’t leave. Especially during Sail Amsterdam it’s very nice. I can just enjoy it from the comfort of my balcony.

I saw everything change. The problem here is urban decay. People throw their garbage on the streets.’”Riet, 88

“Renewal is necessary, but social housing

must remain. The look of the neighbourhood is good, this is important.’”

Chris, 22

“This is a beautiful area. It’s very close

to the water. But we need more bins. Now

a lot of people just throw things on the

street.’”Rachid, 14

“We need a bigger slide and space to play. O! We also want swings. There

are no swings now.”Samira, 9
