Energy is very similar but even cheaper

๏ but not good near the surface so not good for personal homes

How about Electric Cars?๏ They are only used 8% of their day

๏ Our real world test show that people plug in more often over time

๏ 85% of the country drives 40 miles or less each day so there is energy left in the batteries

๏ If used too much, they can loose range over time

๏ At $1.50 gas, why would I switch?

Well, yah, but...๏ I’ll pay you for using them (hopefully)

๏ Maybe as much as $30k over their 10 year life (when I don’t have to build power plants and other assets to support their load)

There’s a lot of myths floating around about cars these days.

“Forget water powered cars, I’m getting a solar powered car!”

It’s true that solar cars exist, but the laws of physics are against us

= 2 hp

= 190 hp

~27% solar efficiency

would require over 2500% solar efficiency

“Well what if I buy power from renewable resources like solar and wind farms”

“Then I can drive an electric car that’s technically ‘solar powered’”

The truth is, unless you own one of these...

...then congratulations, you already drive a “solar powered” car.

Don’t believe me?

In fact, almost all energy we use today is a by-product of solar radiation

“Yeah, but we can’t wait a million years for more oil to be created”

Thats true...

...but don’t assume that electricity is the only “renewable” way of storing energy

So what fuel will be in your next car when petroleum runs out?

Answering that question is problematic, because we built our

entire economy on the best fuel for the job - petroleum (gas, diesel)

๏ People don’t want to lose the comforts engineered around petroleum- I want a lot of horsepower- I want to drive 300 miles between refueling- Refueling should be fast- Fuel tanks shouldn’t take up much room

Fuel Contenders: Batteries๏ Cheap and no exhaust waste

๏ Electric motors are very efficient at turning electricity into motion.

๏ Energy density is horrible. In the Tesla car, 200 miles of battery power weigh 1000 lbs and take up alot of space

Fuel Contenders: Hydrogen๏ Electrolysis should allow for clean creation,

fuel-cells cleanly power cars

๏ Should be fast to refuel

๏ Low energy density, compression requires cooling

Fuel Contenders: Alcohols

๏ High energy density; would need a 15 gallon tank to match a 10 gallon gas tank

๏ Existing technology and infrastructure is ready to support it

(Ethanol & Long Chain Hydrocarbons)

๏ Generates pollution as exhaust from being burned

Anything else?๏ General rule of thumb is, the more dense

and complex the fuel, the less you can create of it

What’s the bottom line on these different fuels?

Which one is most practical?

Is hydrogen worth the investment?๏ Hydrogen only solves one problem with

batteries (refuel rate), but introduces a more complex problem of building an entirely new infrastructure.

๏ Hydrogen is more suitable for low temperature environments

Can we make enough alcohol?

๏ Ethanol production might compete with food production, can we spare the land and addition water?

๏ Algae might prove to be the holy grail for generating alcohols

Are batteries good enough?๏ Batteries need to reach 5-10 minute

recharges. Right now you might get stuck at a station in the middle of nowhere for 2 hours.

๏ Densities need to improve to increase distance and give people back their trunks

My predictions for the future

๏ Manufactures should ramp up on alcohol powered cars

๏ Alcohol is our natural transition beyond petroleum. Brazil has already made the transition.

๏ Electric cars will expand when battery advances allow for “roadtrip ready” cars.
