A fringing reef can grow… on the outer edge of a land mass

- This means a fringing reef can grow very close to shore

directly from the shore- This means a fringing reef can grow

directly off of the shore into the ocean. Therefore, this type of fringing reef is attached to the shore

A barrier reef is located much further away from the shore than a fringing reef.

A barrier reef:

• runs parallel to the shore

• is always separated from the shore by a lagoon

Describing a Patch Reef

Patch reefs are only able to form and grow in lagoons.

Patch reefs are smaller patches of coral reef that can only be found within large lagoons. Patch reefs often form in the lagoons of barrier or atoll reefs.

Patch reefs:

• mostly form as circular patches of coral reef

• surrounded by sand or sea grass

• are very common

Describing an Atoll Reef

Patch reefs would not exist if a barrier reef had not formed first.

It takes thousands of years for an atoll reef to form. An atoll reef forms when the landmass/island had completely deteriorated, leaving a barrier reef surrounding a large lagoon which makes it an atoll reef.

Atoll reefs:

• circular or horseshoe-shaped

• surround a central lagoon

• no landmass or island
